L86 machine gun

The 1970 year of the 20th century became very important in stories rearmament of the North Atlantic bloc. Partnership agreement on transfer to another ammunition for small arms weapons (from 7,62 mm to 5,45 mm) entailed not only a radical change in the characteristics of weapons, but also the replacement of the model range of weapons in general.
Adopted new shot made it possible to significantly reduce the mass and force of recoil types of rifle weapons, ammunition in the wearable version to do more, increase the mobility of units, and with it the tactics of the motorized infantry unit changed.

L86 machine gun

Work on the creation of weapons under the "single cartridge"

Work on the creation of weapons under the "single cartridge" with reduced impulse actions were prepared long before the technical re-equipment. At the end of the 60s of the 20th century, the SA-80 rearmament program began in the British Isles, which envisages the creation of new types of small arms in the IW (individual weapon) and LSW (light military support) types. During the implementation of this program in the IW category, the XL-65 assault rifle for 4.85x49 was created, and the result of the LSW category was the creation and adoption of the machine gun by the Armed Forces of the Kingdom, which after the standardization program for the "single cartridge" was named L86A1. During the same program, the rifle was called L85A1.

The principle of operation of the machine gun L86A

The L86A1 light machine gun was designed based on the L85A1 assault rifle. It is an automatic type weapon, where the principle of operation of automatics consists in applying the energy of the gases of gunpowder that are removed after firing a shot from the bore of the weapon. In the production of a shot, a part of the released gases is removed from the barrel part and creates pressure on the gas piston, which has a small working stroke. The powder gas exhaust system is equipped with a gas regulator, which adapts the weapon for shooting in field and other non-standard situations, and also supports the firing of grenades. Under the pressure of gas energy, the piston moves in the opposite direction and engages the gate frame, which moves progressively with the help of 2 guide rods, which increases the reliability of the weapon when it is contaminated. The shutter when exiting from the state of engagement with the breech of the 7 barrel with lugs, during the return movement, extracts the shot cartridge. Under the action of the force of expansion of the return spring, the bolt begins a forward stroke, while the next ammunition is sent to the chamber, while the barrel bore is locked at the same time. When all the cartridges are fired, the machine gun is set to a shutter lag, which is turned off in manual mode, using the flag - the fuse on the right side of the barrel box, which is located behind the hole for the extraction of spent cartridges. The hole is located on the right side of the upper part of the machine gun and is equipped with a metal curtain with a spring that, when fired, rises to eject the fired cartridges. The constructive arrangement of the extraction hole makes it difficult for a person with a left leading hand to shoot, because with the emphasis placed on the left shoulder, the heated cartridges will fly straight into the face of the shooter. The machine gun is arranged according to the configuration of the bullpup (the holder is located at the back of the trigger), which makes its dimensions more miniature than with the classic arrangement of the holder. With such a length of the trunk. USM kurkovogo type, connected with the descent of the plow. The safety flag is located above the trigger guard and is executed in the form of a button with the “safe” and “fire” positions, and the fire-type interpreter is located in the lower left part and makes it possible to fire in two positions: single shots and automatic bursts. The trunk box consists of two parts (upper and lower), which have a pin joint. When assembling a machine gun, both steel and polyamide parts made from materials of increased strength (weapon accessories) are used.

Differences between machine gun and assault rifle

The differences between the machine gun and the assault rifle consist in the barrel length (646mm in L86 and 548mm in L85), the L86 has an additional handle that is located behind the neck of the holder and helps fire in bursts. Also machine gun L86A1 is equipped with bipods that increase the area of stability of the machine gun when shooting prone. Bipods are regulated only in height from 19 cm to 28.5cm.

The disadvantages and advantages of weapons

These include low unpretentiousness, as in the prototype L85A1, as well as the small capacity of the standard clip (clip holders are used on 30 shots, but it is also possible to use STANAG 4179 firing tanks under the “single cartridge”). The main advantages of the L86A1 include its good accuracy, which directly depends on the length of the barrel and the SUSAT optics equipment.

The machine gun remains in service with the army of the United Kingdom and is designed to support motorized infantry units with high-density fire, or to destroy enemy enemy infantry units at ranges exceeding the damaging effect of L85 assault rifles and L110 short-barreled machine guns, which are replaced by L86.

It can be seen that the author got confused - once 7,62 mm, then it should be 5,45 mm laughing

        But 7.62 is different - 7.62 x 54, 7.62 x 51 (the same for NATO), then if 7.62 x 54 - then it will be 5.45 if NATO - in theory it should be 5.56

Not Russian, but Soviet. Most countries of the former USSR use AK-74

The British military placed very considerable hopes on the L86, which it did not justify ... They initially (apparently in a state of euphoria from the new machine gun) even rushed to send the unified L7A2 GPMG for storage. However, the first Gulf War (1991) forced to reconsider this decision and return the machine guns to the troops ...

In general, I talked with the Briton alone, said that they were delivered when the Belgian minimis were used to replace one LSW in the compartment, their efficiency did not increase much, the machine guns delivered had a short barrel, 200-300 meters said it was simply ineffective.

Machine gun Enfield l86 could be attributed to “automatic rifles”, since it lacks most of the essential features of a light machine gun, the barrel is irreplaceable, and power is supplied from an assault rifle store of limited capacity. Nevertheless, this is the British version of the machine gun for the infantry squad or the “light support weapon” (LSW), as it is now called in the British army. The design uses up to 80% of the details of the L85 assault rifle, a longer and heavier barrel is installed, some changes are made to the trigger mechanism: when setting the continuous fire mode, firing is carried out from the rear sear, the bolt remains open after firing, and with a single fire - shot with a fully locked shutter, after a shot, the next cartridge is sent to the chamber.

Thanks to the elongated and heavier barrel, single-shot shooting gives particularly good accuracy, and in 1995 a self-loading modification was adopted as a "sniper" weapon. Light machine gun Enfield L86A1 It is an automatic weapon with magazine power supply and gas venting, built according to the bullpup scheme, the gas vent mechanism has a short-stroke piston located above the barrel and includes a gas regulator. The barrel is locked by turning the shutter, fire is conducted from the open shutter. The receiver is stamped from steel.

Machine gun Enfield L86A1 has the ability to fire in single shots or bursts, the fire mode translator is located on the receiver behind the receiver for the store. Protection against accidental shots is provided by a non-automatic fuse, the switch of which is located above the trigger guard. Food is supplied from standard box magazines, while using magazines with a capacity of more than 30 rounds when shooting from a prone position is extremely difficult. The barrel is not replaceable, the bipod is mounted not on the barrel, but on a special tire passing under the barrel, which improves the accuracy of firing from the bipod. The standard sight is a 4X SUSAT optical sight with illumination of the aiming mark. On the butt plate of the butt there is a hinged wire shoulder rest for holding weapons at the shoulder, under the receiver - an additional vertical handle.

Need to say. what a machine gun Enfield l86 inherited all the problems and troubles of the L85A1 assault rifle, including low reliability, inconvenience in handling, and more in the same spirit. Due to its low reliability, this "machine gun" could actually be used more like an ersatz of a sniper rifle, thanks to its long heavy barrel and good optical sight. Despite the reliability issues, the lack of a quick-change barrel and small magazine capacity significantly limited the L86A1's ability as a support weapon. And if the problems of the L85A1 rifle were solved by a serious upgrade to the L85A2 configuration, then the machine guns produced in a much smaller quantity were not modified. Instead, the British Armed Forces are purchasing FN Minimi machine guns, which will take on the role of squad-level fire support weapons. The L86A1 weapon will also remain in service for the time being to provide targeted firing with single shots and short bursts at ranges inaccessible to the L85A2 assault rifles and Minimi machine guns, which have a shorter barrel.

A little not about the machine gun, but about the British. At the end of the 90s, I was assigned to one unit in Odessa. I joined the patrol a couple of times. Once I stood with the cadets in the port. A British frigate came there. Well, we were the first to go on an "excursion". I was interested in gun mounts, but we were not allowed into the warhead. And the cadets were shown small arms tied with a chain through a trigger guard. One of them so cleverly disassembled and assembled everything (assault rifle L85, company machine gun and pistol). The British did not even know that it was possible to disassemble them, tfu a pistol, with the help of a penknife. When asked how, he said that they had these samples at the institute. This is going back to the themed "Equalizer" and the scientific school.

Well done this lad !!! good smile
But what does the ever-memorable "Equalizer" and the Ukrainian scientific school have to do with it? .. what recourse

The cadet was a Ravist and, like, in his second year, but he knew what I had learned much later already as a cap. They were prepared for the design of weapons.
Therefore, I criticized the Equalizer as an unnamed homemade product and disproved an opponent who ardently proves that all gunsmiths are only in Russia and the Ukrainian school is dead. But this is a completely different topic. I just remembered the story of an English assault rifle.

So I wonder why? . (Archaeologists say the small forepaws of the Rex dinosaur are not for hunting, but for love. This handle on the butt is probably also needed for something.)

Everything is somehow interesting for the British - the "Bren" machine gun with a store on top, a PP (I don't remember the name) with a store on the side .... and this is a miracle! ..... they called the wrong country Honduras .... PS Why is the captain's shoulder strap stuck at the bottom of my avatar? Enlighten the old one!

GermanBy the way, Bren is a license of a Czech machine gun. A PP-walls with a magazine on the side for ease of shooting, nothing like that was a machine. but their news is L85, and the machine gun on its base is completely sucked by the Britons, although proud but howl from this miracle - but they do not refuse! national pride wink - bullshit but your own !! love by the way the most expensive in the history of small arms - a whole lard of pounds spent on it! wassat and what is his disassembly and cleaning kit belay swinging! fool not that our Kalash has a lot of stocks there, otherwise you’ll understand the horse-radish, you understand Europe !! laughing so the device is nothing but subject to greenhouse use !! feel

If our potential opponents have such a weapon, I’m only glad, I think we need to give them the idea that we should not stop there and it is necessary to create a new version of the "machine gun" with a magazine capacity of 15 rounds, or even better 5! laughing

If right-handed, then hold the back handle with your left hand. For our machine gun, this function is solved differently: a large hole in the butt.
