History OJSC "Special Design Bureau of Machinery" (SKBM) in Kurgan begins with 1954, when the Special Design Bureau (SKB) was established at the Kurgan Machine Building Plant, which took over the technical support of the release of the AT-C tractor. In 1956, the special design bureau began developing its own X-tracked artillery tractor "650 Object". The needs of the USSR Armed Forces in the new tractor were so great that in the 1959 year, even before the completion of state tests, the tractor was put into service under the symbol ATC-59. The serial production of ATS-59 was conducted at KMZ from 1961 to 1968 years. AT-C and ATS-59 were actively exported.

In the development of ATS-59 in the middle of 1960-s, SKB KMZ developed a tracked artillery tractor with a fully closed body "Object 668", put into service in 1970 year under the symbol ATS-59Г. In connection with the production of the BMP-1 infantry combat vehicle developed by the Chelyabinsk Tractor Plant design bureau at the KMZ, the production of ATS-59G was transferred from KMZ to Poland. At the beginning of 1970, the SKB KMZ was transferred from the CTZ OKB and the technical support of the BMP-1. As a result, SKB KMZ became as a result the leading domestic design bureau for the creation of infantry fighting vehicles. Later, SKB worked on upgrading the BMP-1, creating its variants BMP-1K (commander), BMP-1С (with the AV-1 sighting equipment) and BMP-1ПГ (with an additional installation of the 30-mm automatic grenade launcher).
