"Tornado-U": army vehicle with increased payload

15
In the framework of the Army-2015 forum, for the first time, a new army all-terrain and payload vehicle Tornado-U was shown to the general public. A car with an onboard platform module is designed for transporting weapons, military and special equipment, transportation of various goods, towing transport and special trailers. The gross weight of the truck is up to 30 tons, its payload is up to 16 tons, the weight of the towed trailer is 12 tons. It is assumed that the car can be presented in both armored and unarmored version. In particular, the cabin "Tornado-U" can receive different degrees of protection (depending on the installation of various sets of protection).

By launching the Ural-M truck, which is a significantly modernized famous Ural-4320, into production, Miass began to prepare for the launch of the production of new trucks for the Russian Ministry of Defense. On the basis of the same "Ural-M" was created a family of cars "Motovoz-M", including the basic three-axle chassis with a total weight of 22,5 tons, equipped with an engine of the YMZ-536 family, as well as trucks with the wheel formula 4 x4 and 8 x8. Army off-road trucks of the Motovoz-M family differed from similar in power and mass-dimensional characteristics of Ural-M trucks, primarily by the original hood and utilitarian frame-panel cab, which allows for hidden booking.

At the same time, the Tornado-U in its pure form is a truck with a body of impressive size and with a chassis that is more traditional for all cargo “Urals”: it uses dependent spring suspension, continuous bridges and, in any case, an experimental copy manual gearbox. At the same time, as experts note, such a structure is simple, and therefore cheaper to manufacture and operate. At the same time, they noted that the next generation of Ural cargo SUVs was left without an independent suspension. The blessing the plant at last has left from pneumohydraulic brake system, having stopped the choice on pure pneumatics.

It should be noted that today in Russia, many developments have similar names. Only "Typhoon" currently exists three: armored vehicles of increased security class MRAP (with protection from mines and improvised explosive devices) - KAMAZ 63968 Typhoon-K and Ural-63095 Typhoon-U (the letters "U" and "K" in the title designate respectively, "Ural" and "KamAZ"), as well as a full-fledged armored personnel carrier KAMAZ-63969 Typhoon.

With Tornado, the situation is no less interesting. The Russian army currently has modernized multiple rocket launchers (MLRS) - Tornado-G and Tornado-S. These are modernized still Soviet MLRS 9K51 "Grad" caliber 122 mm and MLRS 9K58 "Smerch" caliber 300 mm (respectively, the letters "G" and "C" mean the names of these systems). MLRS "Grad" was mounted on the chassis of the truck Ural-4320, which was created in 1977 year. Attempts to replace the chassis with a more modern one have been made many times before. For example, in Belarus, the MLRS BM-21 BelGrad was built on the basis of the Belarusian MAZ-6317 chassis. Therefore, it is not surprising that the new chassis of the original design from the Ural Automobile Plant received the unified name "Tornado-U"; it can be used as a chassis for the TORC-G and Tornado-S MLRS.

One of the main advantages of the Tornado-U chassis is the increased carrying capacity with a relatively small dead weight. In the future, it is planned to create a whole family of Tornado-U cars in the 4x4, 6x6 and 8x8 versions. At the same time, the variant of the off-road truck “Tornado-U” with the wheel formula 6х6 was actively demonstrated at exhibitions, and the renders of the truck tractor from the family “Tornado-U” with the wheel formula 8х8 on the spring suspension of the rear axles appeared on the Internet in early autumn 2016.

None of the specialists of the Ural Automobile Plant makes no secret that the Tornado-U truck was built on the basis of a civilian three-axle tractor Ural-6370, which has a bonded layout. This truck was produced in small batches in Miass for the civilian market, relatively recently the car was also accepted for supply by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation. The Tornado-U actually received similar bridges and a frame, and its index is not much different from the civil model Ural-63704-0010.

At the same time, it used bridges of the Hungarian company Raba, which had no analogues in terms of carrying capacity at the Gaz group of companies, which today includes the Ural automobile plant, simply was not. Until recently no one produced such bridges in the country. For example, the KamAZ, which faced the need to create its own three-axle and four-axle off-road chassis, initially completed them with Madara bridges of Bulgarian production. To master the release of these bridges (to localize) in Naberezhnye Chelny could fall 2015 year. Apparently, the developers of "Tornado-U" will go the same way.

The creators call the “Tornado-U” a replacement for KrAZ trucks, since in terms of their characteristics they are comparable to the Kremenchug all-terrain vehicle: the gross weight is 30 tons, the payload capacity is 16 tons. At the same time, the engine power of the Ural truck is more - 440 hp. It is worth noting that the Tornado-U, apparently, has a YMZ-652 forced engine, since the power of the original motor does not exceed the HP 412.

Although the "Tornado-U" came out much heavier than the usual "Urals", the designers did everything to maintain a high level of cross-country ability. They used a two-stage razdatku with a lockable differential, as well as drive axles with central and wheel gearboxes, middle and rear axles with locking cross-wheel differentials, with axle locking on the middle axle. The assisted ground clearance in 400 mm and large-diameter wheels with tires with a “toothed” tread pattern of the 16.00R20 dimension are also included in assisting all-terrain vehicles. Also on the car was installed manual gearbox and dependent spring suspension. The working brake system has become a dual-circuit with pneumatic drive and ABS.

As one of the features of the new army truck manufacturer allocates a cabin. Cabin hood, frame-panel construction, triple, was equipped with heating, air conditioning and ventilation. Part of the cab exterior panels — hood, roof, doors — are made of composite materials. There are three seats in the cab, while the driver's seat is sprung. The entrance to it is quite high, but for the convenience of the driver there is a hanging step, as well as handles in the doorway.

The use of frame-panel cab allows you to solve the problem with the protection of the driver and passengers. Perhaps a reserved reservation, when the armor is placed under the outer panels of the cabin, it is not visible from the outside. Installation on the KDZ cab - a set of additional protection can provide 5-th class of protection according to GOST-50963-96 (protection against armor-piercing bullets of 7,62-mm caliber, released from AKM from a distance of 5-10 meters). But this is not all that concerns the protection of "Tornado-U". The engine of the truck is protected by an armored capsule, and mine protection can be mounted under the bottom. Thus, from firing from small weapons and the detonation protects not only the crew and the most important in terms of mobility units and components, but also the fuel tank, which provides the car with an impressive cruising range of about 1000 kilometers when driving on the highway.

At the same time, a sample of the off-road truck Tornado-U, presented at the Army-2015 forum in June 2015, already raised questions from automotive journalists regarding its technical content. In particular, AvtoReview noted that the Ural plant never produced bridges of such carrying capacity. Therefore, the designers used the Hungarian Raba bridges, the YMZ-652 diesel engine (produced in Yaroslavl under license from Renault Trucks, licensed by Renault dCi 11), Sachs clutch and ZF gearbox. At the same time, the chief designer of the Urals for military equipment, Oleg Yakupov, in an interview with TASS, said that when assembling the Tornado-U, only Russian components would be used. Apparently, the only way is to localize the production of some of them in our country.

At RAE-2015, which was held in Nizhny Tagil in September 2015, the Tornado-U was shown to the public, more in keeping with the voiced concept of a truck with fully Russian components. According to Yakupov, the company completely abandoned the German-made transfer case, replacing it with the domestic one produced in the Urals enterprises. Also on all the "Tornado-U" were Russian engines. According to Oleg Yakupov, work was underway to replace the imported gear box with the domestic one.

The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation highly appreciated the novelty “Ural-63704-0010” - “Tornado-U” of the development of the “Ural” automobile plant, spoke on the results of the international forum “Army-2015” Oleg Yakupov. In an interview with TASS, he stressed that the leadership of the Ministry of Defense and representatives of the Main Automobile and Armored Directorate highly appreciate this model of freight transport. According to Yakupov, the company will continue development work and tests of this model in order to launch the Tornado-U mass production in the future.

Colonel Andrei Kolutkov, Head of the Research Center for Automotive Technology at the Central Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense, noted in February 2016 that the new high-capacity truck Tornado-U, developed by the Ural Automobile Plant, is undergoing preliminary tests. According to the colonel, a truck with an armored cab was tested in the Arctic. Then same source RIA News in the military-industrial complex said that the "Tornado-U" appeared completely new bridges and other transmissions.

With the development of serial production of trucks "Tornado-U" (and this can happen before 2018 of the year), the Ural automobile plant will have at its disposal an army off-road truck of a new class. Surely, this machine will be in demand not only in the armed forces of Russia, but also in the armies of other countries.

Performance characteristics of the Ural-63704-0010 "Tornado-U":

You compare round with sour. Typhoon is a MRAP, a vehicle for transporting personnel and goods, protected from sabotage. Protection against sabotage in it is a priority. The Tornado is simply an army truck, a vehicle to replace the Urals in service.

Forgive me, of course, but the cockpit of an army truck MUST be armored. A priori. After all, this is a machine for the delivery of goods in the frontline zone. And in it, shelling and all sorts of other joys are possible.

Well, in addition to transportation in the frontline zone, there is still a bunch of logistics in the rear - and such an overwhelming majority, a priori. But yes, the fact that in Syria we do not always drive around, but often in ordinary KAMAZs and passenger cars is a terrible savagery. They would take an example from the Americans in good things - with their ubiquitous shouts and other bugs. There would have been fewer generals in hospitals.

A military truck carrying out logistics between the station and a district warehouse, for example - no armored cab needed - excess weight, reduces payload.

    Vehicle with on-board platform module
They simply went astray with this modularity; 20 years ago, on a lawn, no one knew that they were modules on a dump truck on a lawn.
At the same time, they noted that the next generation of Ural freight SUVs was left without independent suspension.
And rightly so, the transport truck must go and be repaired on its knee.
Fortunately, the plant has finally left the pneumo-hydraulic brake system, choosing pure pneumatics.
Finally it happened, we waited crying (these are tears of joy Yes )

That's really a joy, this system was the devil that while it works like nothing.
As soon as almost serviceability, all FIGs you will adjust it.
      How much blood drove drank.
A friend worked as a foreman at a timber industry farm.
There were deported convicts on timber trucks
So after a week of work in the Urals, on a hill with a round log, they moaned.
Send the boss back to the colony, I’ll live there even until release.

With RABA axles, tire inflation is apparently absent. The system is very useful, although rarely used. But pneumatic brakes have been waiting for a long time, the old version is very moody.

A working tire pressure regulation system is one of the main conditions for off-road patency .... 4 years on the Yamal Peninsula I think they give me the right to insist on the need for "this option" =)

URALAZ switched to a 4-day working week - the economy is sagging and sagging.
There are fewer orders from civilians.
If it weren’t for military orders, everything would have been really bad.

It would be interesting to know if it will pull the claimed 16 tons off-road. Previously, load ratings often indicated two values.

As he was a "cannibal" so apparently he will remain him. Sorry, Woob snobs, but this is the opinion of the truck driver from distant Kolyma, who knows the history of the issue with his hemorrhoids, osteochondrosis, etc. etc. and has a very short experience in operating the VOLVO FH12 .... And from the abandonment of ZF and the Slave and Renov engines, stranovoto looks ..
