Combat aircraft will receive new weapons - self-defense laser

US Air Force bombers plan to equip with high-energy lasers to protect against enemy fighters and missiles. The Pentagon has already signed a one-million dollar 2.7 contract with TAU Technologies, under which a compact combat laser will be developed for installation on jet planes and bombers.

The laser will have a power of about 100 kW, which will allow it to destroy anti-aircraft missiles, helicopters, fighters and Drones. According to the US military, the new weapons will significantly increase the survivability of combat aviation, especially representatives of heavy, low-maneuverable aircraft such as tanker or bombers.

To develop an effective laser weapons TAU Technologies specialists will have to solve the problem of reducing the beam over long distances in order to deliver a huge amount of energy to the target. It should be noted that most of the components of combat lasers have already been successfully developed, so the prototype can be created quite quickly.

The new laser for self-defense will be fully scalable, it can be easily installed on different types of aircraft. During the project implementation, many large-scale computer simulations and field tests of the newest weapon system are planned.

If developments end successfully, then the US Air Force will be equipped with a type of weapon capable of solving a wide range of tasks. The power of the 100 kW laser is enough to completely destroy the optical systems of airplanes and ground-based technology in a matter of seconds, neutralize infrared homing missiles, destroy an enemy fighter pilot or even burn a UAV. The laser thus uses the power system of the aircraft, therefore, heavy ammunition is not required. The laser has valuable properties for military aviation, it is capable of hitting targets with high accuracy, and the energy is delivered to the target almost instantly. This will allow simultaneously to fire at several maneuverable air targets and hit ground targets. In this case, the aircraft gets more freedom to maneuver than when using a gun.
