Makarov Pistol - modifications and upgrades

Makarov pistol modernized
Like any other weapon, PM also underwent various modifications and upgrades. At the end of the last century, the designers created a modernization of the PM, which went into series and is used in service. The main idea of modernization is to improve the characteristics of the PM due to the high-pulse reinforced ammunition "57H181СМ" 9х18-mm caliber. Designers R.Shigapov and B.Pletsky designed a modernized pistol for a new ammunition, which began to be mass-produced from the 94 of the year. The upgraded pistol is used in units of the Ministry of the Interior.

Makarov Pistol - modifications and upgrades

Structural features
At first glance, the PMM differs from the PM by a more convenient enlarged plastic handle. At the end of the handle there is a notch that allows you to more reliably hold the gun. The gun is provided with a single-row 8 ammunition shop or 2-row 12 single-row ammunition. In modern pistols, the store capacity of more than a dozen ammunition is widely used. This was one of the tasks of the modernization of the gun. 2's row magazine is made tapering to the upper part, the neck remained single-row execution. This allowed to leave the bolt and the slot under the store unchanged. New helical grooves in the chamber, designed to use a new high-impulse reinforced ammunition for the PM, despite the dissipation of the increased pressure of powder gases in the channel. Slightly protruding, the cover of the store increases the palm support, which allows a slightly increased recharge rate. The pressure in the barrel when using a new ammunition increased by about 15 percent. In terms of power, the use of ammunition 9x18-mm caliber was almost equal to the parabellum 9x19-mm ammunition, and this is without a large increase in recoil and gun pressure. But using “57H181CM” ammunition in an ordinary Makarov pistol will fail — constructively it is not designed for any increase in the pressure of powder gases. After all, even when firing from an upgraded pistol, the acoustic cotton grew due to the pressure of the muzzle of the pistol increased by 20.

Other modifications based on PM
The Izhevsk mechanical plant produced a version of the PM pistol called IL-70 or Baikal. Option is available as an export model. The main difference between the IZH-70 and the standard Makarov pistol is an adjustable sight, made for a type of sports sight. However, the sports career of a pistol IL-70 raises certain doubts.
Another option - IL-70-17. Also appeared on the arms market in 94 year. The main difference - the use of ammunition .380 ACP.
The next option - IL-70 ХЦ. The main difference is the used magazine for 10 ammunition and slightly larger cheek handles.
Outwardly, all the "IL-70", reaching the foreign market are quite diverse. Domestic "Makarovs" are popular abroad mainly because of their low cost compared to competitors in the market.
Domestic version of the pistol based on the PM, as a service weapon - IL-71. The gun is designed for security and security units of the private sector. IL-71 turned out as an intermediate pistol between military weapons and weapons for pocket wear. Under the gun developed ammunition "Kurz" caliber 9x17-mm. The cartridge is made with a shortened sleeve and a reduced bullet diameter, as required. By law, the muzzle energy should not exceed 300 J. The cartridge is a kind of .380 ACP ammunition with a lead bullet core. This particular cartridge made it possible to use the combat PM as a service pistol IL-71. The weight of the pistol IL-71 - 730 grams, has an enlarged handle and an enlarged shop on 10 ammunition, equipped with a constant sight.
Another development of the Izhevsk plant - IL-70-400. In 93, designer P.Inshin presented a version of a Makarov pistol for parabellum ammunition 9х19-mm. The main difference of the pistol is the slow unlocking of the barrel bore, using for this purpose the screw annular grooves in the chamber. Izh-70-400 pistol casing bolt was heavy on a standard PM on 30 grams.

The main characteristics of PMM:
- ammunition caliber 9-mm;
- bullet weight 5.4 grams;
- punching effect of ammunition with 20 meters - 3-mm steel sheet;
- speed 420 m / s;
- length 16.5 centimeters;
- The length of the barrel 9.3 centimeter;
- centimeter width 3.4;
- height 12.7 centimeter;
- the number of rifling - 4 right;
- range of aiming 50 meters.

    in fact, PM is more than an outdated platform, and it appeared as a very belated copy of WALTER P38 - 38, if I am not mistaken, the year the model appeared speaks for itself .....

          a very late copy of WALTER P38 - 38

          It was made on the basis of Walter but is not a copy. Weapons designers are not considered shameful to copy successful solutions from others, so it is unlikely that they will be able to find a completely original development now.
          PM is made with greater tolerances than Walter, the trigger part with the striker has his own (not from Walter) and the chamber, is structurally designed so that it increases the reliability of the gun.

          An excellent machine, it never failed, a trained shooter (colonel was my commander at that time) right in front of my eyes put eight bullets from 25 meters in a heap, from working with him only positive impressions

    Replica WALTER P38

    There is nothing in common between these pistols.
    PM is almost a copy of another model - "Walter - RRK".

    It’s a good pistol for its time, lightweight, compact, easy to handle. However, modern army needs pistols with more penetrating ability. What is alarming is the disgusting quality of weapons production in recent years. I can’t judge the combat, I can only compare civilian and service based PM.Izh 71 after 2005 is replete with failures, even a slight ingress of moisture leads to corrosion. I don’t even want to talk about the rubber barrel Makarych. I saw 2 Makarychs with bloated trunks. It seems that the production was ie not on the Izhevsk plant, and somewhere in the Chinese locksmith

      I had to shoot from Soviet-era PM more than once, I didn’t see the swollen trunks, and everything else was like that, I still remember his ability to double shot (I watched it 2 times), but it seemed to be produced then in Tula

        I talked more about civilian and service weapons, they are fired at the Izhevsk factory. And I personally observed a double shot from IZH71 when I shot cartridges in the expert dash of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for a bulletproof magazine. After the doublet, the expert sustained a minor hand injury, unfolded one and threw it back, tearing the expert skin.

          I watched the doublets under other circumstances. One guy deliberately sawed the whisper to facilitate the descent (athlete). So he had a gun after a pair of clips (heating), not only he doubled, but he could also drop the line for 3-4! :-)

    As a military weapon, it is possible. But as a civilian for self-defense, if there was a normal, civilized "Law on Weapons" in Russia, it is very effective - you don't even need to shoot, his mere sight of street thugs will produce a sobering effect, because in our country PM is in the hands implies that it can only be combat.

    pm as a military weapon is outdated, but it’s too early to write it off, there would be a normal law on weapons, it would be an excellent pistol for self-defense of citizens.

        Have mercy!
        What an antique! Over 18 years of service, various business trips and murderous conditions, there has not been a single refusal, of course, subject to reasonable care (he cleaned the dirt, cleaned it from rust). Despite the rearmament, all my friends, if possible, refuse to use the PY (no other option) despite seemingly obvious advantages: a more powerful cartridge, ergonomics and a capacious store. All these advantages are leveled by practice: the use of pistols at distances of more than 15 meters is quite problematic from a legal point of view, you can miss, bang or injure a civilian or any of your own (including rebounding, there were such cases in practice), so think twice before than bullets, well, and since no difference is visible, the lads chooses PM: both in size and in recoil (accordingly, aiming at a target after a shot is faster). And according to this, for special events, detentions and assaults, as a rule, the guys pick up a rather diverse arsenal, and a pistol as an optional weapon is almost obligatory both for us and for the militants. So the debate about the merits of this pistol will continue for quite some time until it is completely removed from the armament, and I think there are a lot of supporters of this pistol, including cool special forces.

          All right PM is the best automatic gun of the 20th and even the 21st century! Whatever everyone tells me. I dragged him for many years, shot in the service and comparing with other models, I will say that today there is no more compact and convenient automatic pistol for close combat. But I believe that we would have a compact revolver in service and would have the opportunity to choose, I would choose a revolver ...

    the author clearly heard the ringing ... and that’s it. With Walther and other pistols with a spring on the barrel, it REALLY looks similar and the barrel has a bolt and
    the frame and even the clip, well, it’s necessary. Makarov is still the most reliable pistol in the world (the Soviet pr-v naturally) the cartridge by today's standards is rather weak now there are better and fewer systems) despite what the Kamaz will not stop racing for a pistol))

    The author of "Roman Dzhereleiko" again! And he named the Revelli grooves "New screw grooves in the chamber, created for the use of a new high-impulse reinforced ammunition for PM, despite the dispersion of the increased pressure of powder gases in the channel." As far as I remember from the course of fire training, the Revelli grooves are designed to slow down the extraction of the spent cartridge case from the chamber and, accordingly, reduce the recoil momentum of the bolt (bolt carrier). Learn materiel, young man!
    The only thing that Makarov borrowed from Walter is the scheme for locking the shutter trigger with a bracket on the frame of the gun. the rest is mine. Or say this: almost your own. Since gunsmiths have a phrase that everything that could be created in small arms was created by John Moses Browning. The remaining designers only improve his ideas.
