Large-caliber sniper rifle Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm (USA)
The company Truvelo Armory Manufacturers from the Republic of South Africa has been developing small arms since the mid-nineties of the last century. To date, the company’s catalog contains several variants of high-precision sniper weapons with different characteristics. As part of the CMS (Counter Measure Sniper) weapon line, customers are offered eight models of sniper rifles of various calibers, from 6,5 mm to 20 mm. The intermediate position in this family is occupied by samples calculated for 12,7x99 mm and 14,5x114 mm cartridges. The latter is proposed to be used with a rifle that has the obvious name Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm.
Like other products of its family, the CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle is intended for solving combat missions related to the defeat of enemy manpower and materiel. Using the high firepower provided by the large-caliber cartridge, the rifle can be used for firing at remote targets, which are lightly armored combat vehicles, communications and control equipment, as well as various stationary and mobile objects.
CMS rifles were developed taking into account the possible use in urban battles. To this end, measures were taken in all eight projects aimed at reducing the size and weight of the products. In particular, some rifles are equipped with a folding butt, which to some extent facilitates transportation. Also, some units that facilitate the firing of fairly heavy and powerful rifles. It is assumed that all used ideas and solutions will simplify the operation of weapons, without affecting the basic fighting qualities.
The overall layout of the Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle was formulated in accordance with current trends in the development of small arms, as well as taking into account the specific requirements of the project. The result was an interesting look, in which all the parts have the minimum necessary shapes and sizes. At the same time, the full implementation of the tasks is ensured.
The rifle gets a long rifled barrel, connected with a reinforced receiver. The latter is fixed on a short metal bed, which has attachments for a bipod and a fixed butt. In accordance with existing ideas, the rifle can be equipped with additional devices of various types, for which several standard Picatinny slats are placed on it.
The main part of the weapon is a rifled barrel of 14,5 caliber mm 992 mm long (68 caliber). The barrel bore has eight grooves in increments of 1: 16. At the muzzle of the barrel there are fasteners for installing the muzzle brake. The middle part of the outer surface of the trunk has several lobes, which facilitate the construction and, to a certain extent, improve cooling. The breech, which holds the chamber for ammunition 14,5x114 mm, has an increased outer diameter. It has grooves for lugs and fasteners for connection to the receiver. For proper operation of all systems during a shot, the barrel connects only with the box and hangs over the box units without contacting them.
Due to the high power of the cartridge rifle CMS 14.5x114 mm needs a means of reducing recoil. For this purpose, a muzzle brake is used as part of a CMS series weapon. The 14,5-mm anti-material rifle receives a dual-chamber active-reactive type brake. The gases coming out of the barrel hit the partitions of the brake, and then are pulled to the sides and back. This design of the muzzle brake can significantly reduce the recoil momentum acting on the arrow.
The receiver is necessary to accommodate the gate, has a characteristic complex shape. The front and rear parts have a faceted outer surface and large dimensions, providing the required strength. The central section, in turn, has a cylindrical surface in the left and upper parts. On the right there is a large window for ejection of spent cartridges. At the bottom of the receiver are the receiving window of the store and mounting for the firing mechanism. In addition, there are devices for connecting with the box. On the upper surface of the receiver is a Picatinny rail for mounting a sight.
The bolt of the Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle has been developed based on the same ideas as the units of other weapons of this family. A longitudinally sliding shutter with manual operation is used. The shutter itself is a cylindrical unit with spiral grooves on the outer surface, which facilitate the construction and reduce the negative impact of pollution. In front of the gate is a mirror with a spring-loaded ejector and a hole for the output of the drummer. Also there are four lugs, linked with the corresponding grooves of the breech breech. The drummer and its spring are located inside the bolt. On the tail of the shutter is mounted reload handle.
The weapon gets a large muzzle brake with high performance
Reloading weapons is standard for systems of this class. To unlock the barrel and eject the sleeve, the shutter is rotated counterclockwise, and then retracted. Then this part returns to its place and is fixed by turning it clockwise. In this case, the lugs engage with the barrel, and the bolt handle is fixed with an additional stop.
In the CMS 14.5x114 mm project, a hammer-type firing mechanism is used, all main parts of which are placed inside the receiver. The operation of the trigger is controlled by the trigger and the manual safety lever lever, located inside the common safety guard.
As a means of ammunition used detachable box magazine capacity of five rounds. The magazine is placed in the lower receiving shaft of the box and secured with a latch. Replacing the store is a fairly simple procedure and is hampered only by its relatively large weight.
The barrel of the rifle is fixed on the bed of small length. This unit begins near the breech breech and only comes to the neck of the butt, where the mounts of the latter are located. In this case, the front of the bed is supplemented with a beam with Picatinny slats and attachments for a bipod. The presence of this beam allows you to equip the weapon with the required equipment, and also to some extent reduces the size and weight of the entire product assembly.
On the hinge lodge rigidly and without a hinge butt with built-in adjustment systems. You can adjust the rubber pad and cheeks. Unlike some other rifles of the Counter Measure Sniper family, the CMS 14.5xXNNUMX mm product does not have the ability to fold the stock for easier carrying.
The Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle does not have a standard sight, but it can be used with different types of optical devices. On the strap of the receiver, you can install an optical or night sight of any model that has the appropriate mounting. The use of open sights, however, is not provided. The muzzle of the trunk does not receive the fly and cannot be equipped with it.
The 14,5-mm anti-material rifle has a total length of 1,81 m with a height without a sight 280 mm and a width 85 mm. The weight of the weapon with an unnamed sight and an equipped magazine is determined at the level of 22 kg. Such parameters do not allow to call a weapon light and compact, however, they are associated with the type of cartridge used and are unlikely to be seriously reduced.
To improve the combat qualities of the rifle in comparison with other modern samples, it was proposed to use a large caliber cartridge 14,5x114 mm. This ammunition was developed in the Soviet Union in the late thirties and was created for use with the latest anti-tank rifles of several types. In the future, a large-caliber machine gun KPV, also used this ammunition. The wide distribution of weapons for 14,5-mm cartridge with time led to the emergence of new types of weapons, including specialized rifles. One of the latest types of weapons for such a cartridge is the Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle.
Ammunition 14,5x114 mm is equipped with a bullet with a diameter of 14,9 mm weighing about 65 g. The total length of the cartridge is 155,8 mm, the maximum diameter (along the sleeve flange) is 26,95 mm. For the cartridge was developed a large number of bullets for various purposes, primarily armor-piercing tracer and armor-piercing incendiary. Depending on the type of bullet and the weapon used, the initial speed of the bullet can reach 1000 m / s. The muzzle energy is about 32 kJ, which is enough to hit lightly armored targets at considerable distances.
According to the manufacturer, the Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm anti-material rifle has an effective range of fire, depending on the type of cartridge, up to 2500 m. diameter less than 1, see. The rifle is compatible with all modifications of the 500x15 mm cartridge with different bullets.
Like other weapons of its family, the CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle has a fairly modest package. The customer receives the rifle itself, a standard two-chamber muzzle brake, two box magazines and a user manual. Other products are offered to the customer to be purchased separately and in accordance with their own requirements. In particular, it is necessary to separately purchase a bipod with the required parameters. In the promotional materials, the weapon is shown with a folding two-legged unit, but this product is not included in the delivery set.
If necessary, the shooter can purchase repair kits, with the help of which some units subject to wear should be repaired. Three kits for repairing a striker, an ejector and a reflector are proposed. The first one includes a hammer and its spring, and the other two include an ejector or reflector with a corresponding axis and spring.
The goal of the CMS 14.5x114 mm project of Truvelo Armoury Manufacturers was to create advanced small arms with high firepower, range and accuracy of fire. The solution of the problem was the use of the cartridge 14,5х114 mm, not too common in the field of anti-material rifles. However, the Truvelo CMS 14.5x114 mm rifle did not become a unique model. The first version of such a system for 14,5-mm cartridge was proposed in the late eighties - it was the Hungarian large-caliber rifle Gepard M3.
Since then, several other samples of anti-material rifles for the Soviet large-caliber cartridge have entered the market. It is noteworthy that one of these projects, NTW 14.5, was also developed in the Republic of South Africa, and was created by Denel specialists. To date, rifles of this class are in service with several countries and are used with a certain activity by troops and security forces. Due to their specific characteristics, such systems are not widely used and are used to a limited extent.
Large-caliber precision rifle CMS 14.5x114 mm was developed as part of a whole family of systems of similar purpose. As can be judged by published data, the designers of Truvelo Armoury Manufacturers successfully managed to solve the tasks and provide a very interesting sample of small arms. From many other anti-material rifles, created by other developers, the product is characterized by increased characteristics of the fire. If the available parameters seem insufficient to the customer - he can choose more powerful rifles of the CMS family, having a caliber 20 mm.
