The oil complex that the president visited is truly worthy of the attention of the first person of the state. Until now, one of the oldest oil refineries in Russia was located in Tuapse - the plant, combined with an offshore oil terminal and an oil depot, went into operation back in 1929. But even so, it still remained the main enterprise of the city and the main industrial facility of the area.

In 2005, a radical modernization program for the oil refinery began in Tuapse, which actually involved the construction of a new plant without stopping its operation. Eight years after the start of the reconstruction, we reached the key moment - the launch of the first stage and the installation of primary oil refining under the intricate name ELOU-AVT-12. The tricky abbreviation stands for “electric desalting plant - atmospheric-vacuum tube.” And this is the very device - if you can call a huge colossus occupying 100 hectares a device - that separates oil into fractions and thereby allows the entire plant to process it.

The number “12” in the name has no less meaning than in the famous film by Nikita Mikhalkov: it means that the installation is capable of processing 12 million tons of oil per year. There are no analogues to it in Russia at all, and there are only a few of them in the world. The uniqueness of the solution implemented in Tuapse is that usually oil refineries, in order to reach such capacity, use several units in a chain, but there was simply no place to place them on the Black Sea coast. On one side there is water, on the other there are mountains, and the city is surrounded on all sides. So they came up with a “monster” that could be launched into action to match the president himself.

After the launch of ELOU-AVT-12, the volume of oil refining increases from 4,5 to 12 million tons per year, motor fuel will go to both the domestic and foreign markets.
Actually, now the Tuapse refinery will become one of the main centers in Europe for the production of high-quality gasoline: it will be able to switch to producing products of the highest environmental standard Euro-5. This will not least be facilitated by the fact that the depth of oil refining will increase to 98,5%, that is, only one and a half percent of the raw material will end up in a low-productive form.
The refinery will create about 700 new jobs.

On the one hand, the news is encouraging. But, on the other hand, creating something petrochemical in the south of our northern country is not good.
