Russian Aerospace Forces began to use aerial bombs with UMPB, significantly increasing the destruction range

About a year ago, the Russian Aerospace Forces began to use powerful Soviet-designed high-explosive aerial bombs (FABs) with universal planning and correction modules (UMPC) installed on them to strike all types of enemy targets in the Northern Military District zone, which became a real nightmare for the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Although this ammunition is not precision-guided weapons, our pilots have learned to hit enemy military targets with pinpoint accuracy.

But progress does not stand still; Russian military developers continue to improve and modernize the weapons used in the special operation zone. Thus, a number of Ukrainian sources posted on March 8 photographs of what was supposedly a dropped bomb during one of the drops from an operational-tactical aircraft aviation The Russian Aerospace Forces with a guidance and planning system that differs from the existing UMPC - a universal combat planning module (UMPB).

Russian military experts on the Military Chronicle telegram channel studied the images and noted what has changed in the design of the module, which now has a smoother aerodynamic body, likely reducing air resistance. In addition, the aerial bomb presumably uses a new mechanization scheme with folding wings, the design of which is reminiscent of the X-101 cruise missile. Judging by the images, the guidance system includes an interference-proof GLONASS/GPS signal receiver “KOMETA”, developed by VNIIR-Progress. But most importantly, the bomb is now equipped with a jet engine and a fuel tank, which are absent in the UMPC versions.

This is what these innovations give FAB, the authors of the material conclude. Firstly, and most importantly, the ammunition is now capable of covering a significantly greater distance to the target. The fuel tank and UMPB engine allow the bomb to fly up to 80-95 kilometers. while with the UMPC the projectile flew no more than 60 kilometers. Experts conclude that, in fact, the Russian Aerospace Forces received an analogue of several NATO air weapons at once: the Swedish GLSDB, the American Powered JDAM (PJDAM) and the French AASM/HAMMER.

Russian pilots can now drop bombs from low altitudes, making launches of these munitions similar to launches of air-to-surface cruise missiles. This is largely facilitated by the presence of a jet engine. Like the American PJDAM, the Russian UMPB is designed to destroy objects behind the so-called access denial zones (A2/AD). At the same time, the FAB-250, due to its lighter weight, will most likely be able to hit targets at a distance of more than 100 kilometers. This will allow the Aerospace Forces to significantly increase the depth of strikes against reconnoitered positions and targets of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, avoiding detection and destruction by enemy air defense forces.

Separately, it is worth noting that the American Boeing was at the final stage of testing PJDAM in 2022, but, apparently, it was Russia that was able to obtain the first production products, the authors of the telegram channel conclude.

The Russian army began to use in Ukraine a new type of “flying bomb” - UMPB D-30SN, which stands for Universal Interspecific Glide Ammunition (in some sources - a bomb) with a diameter of 30 cm. About this reports the authoritative telegram channel Fighterbomber.

According to the channel, the ammunition is essentially a 30-centimeter pipe into which they managed to stuff control and satellite homing units, wings and more than a hundred kilograms of explosives.

The bomb can be dropped not only by aircraft, but also by a MLRS of the Tornado-S type, or by another rocket system that launches projectiles with a diameter of 30 cm. This is indicated by the definition “Interspecific” in the name of the ammunition.

“In the case of use with the Tornado, a jet engine is attached to it, we charge a full cassette of them and hit the enemy, essentially getting a rocket at the output,” the source writes.

At the moment, aviation uses a model of ammunition without an engine, but most likely this will be corrected in the near future.

“Well, yes, according to feedback from Ukrainians, the tests are going quite successfully,” - writes Fighterbomber.

Yes, but the presence of an engine, and not a powder accelerator, for example, already defines the product as a rocket. If it turns out cheaper than before, of course it’s good. 250 kg is a very serious bomb, and if a cluster warhead is used, then the targets can be diversified.

The most important thing here is that someone at the top allowed such “amateur activity” and set the completion of the task higher than “this is not according to GOST and not a military acceptance.” The guys made the device, tested it, and at the same time, apparently, set up production. And not as is our custom, we will release them in 10+ years, but strictly according to the rules. And this is worth a lot. When I saw this, apparently only the “processor board” was built and manufactured themselves, and the rest was thrown together at home over the evening. This is how it should be done - a quick response to the needs of the front. I wouldn’t be surprised if this was all on their own initiative.

So “the stars aligned”, I can only assume that the RTO (Radio Technical Support) of the Air Force is still the initiative they don’t put as much pressure as in other branches of the military. We have always had more freedom, but there is also more demand from us. Even if any radio equipment breaks down/malfunctions, you won’t sleep until you repair it yourself. Sometimes we sat for days (3-5 days), in stations of hundreds of blocks, surrounded by documentation, diagrams, measuring instruments, etc. But then you know all the equipment as “Our Father”.
PS and here is the enemy’s “initiative” (also done on the knee) on snot and tape:
            https://t.me/UAVDEV/5790
            https://t.me/UAVDEV/5798
So the main thing is this allow the initiative from below, and then it will go on its own, but from above they are afraid of this, and alas, they themselves are not capable of reforming. The enemy has an easier time with this, from idea to implementation and delivery to the troops in one step. So, it’s better not to write new ideas on network sites - we don’t care, but these will be implemented in a moment...

Close to that. The only difference is the engine. If it is liquid, then KR. Solid fuel, and even from those that already existed, then UMPC. However, they write with a fuel tank, which means a turbojet, more expensive and its range should be significant. And here the price also matters. UMPC should be inexpensive, which does not fit in with our military-industrial complex.

It would be more logical to make the engine, wings and guidance system a separate unit, and dock the bomb to it, like a two-stage bomb that is suspended from the plane, the plane releases in the designated square, then the two-stage bomb flies independently to the target where the bomb itself is dropped, and the engine with wings and guidance system on the lung
      returns back for reuse.
