Battle of Antarctica

43
More than 182 years have passed since the hypothetical existence of the Southern Continent was confirmed by Russian navigators Bellingshausen and Lazarev. This continent today, each of us knows as Antarctica. Since then, an epic began that can be called attempts by the Antarctic exploration by representatives of different countries of the world. If people landed on Antarctica, they considered it their first duty to stake out a territory plot and then declare it to be part of their country. For some time, Antarctica was divided into areas of responsibility with its borders and rules. Zones in the 20th century were distributed between the Soviet Union, Norway, the United States of America, Great Britain, New Zealand, France, Australia, Chile, and Argentina. However, this kind of distribution was more contrived. Often countries draw borders without caring about the opinions of others. Moreover, some states so zealously set out to explore the continent, covered with a layer of ice, that without a twinge of conscience they declared “their own” even those territories which by definition could not belong to them. It is worth noting the turbulent activity of the Norwegians on Antarctica, who in the first half of the 20 century managed to declare their territory, which exceeded the kingdom itself almost 11 times! Nor was Norway embarrassed by the fact that her “new territory” unexpectedly grew by those parts of Antarctica that were discovered in 1820-1821 years by Russian travelers. The Australians, too, did not silently look at the "section" and stated that almost 45% of the territory of Antarctica should belong to Canberra. At the same time, the Australians' motivation was special - Australia is just closer to Antarctica than the same France, Norway and Britain, therefore, they say, it relies on the “piece” more.

Battle of Antarctica
Antarctica. Russian station Bellingshausen

In the 30-40 of the last century, representatives of Nazi Germany quite actively mastered Antarctica. A kind of German colony managed to appear here, which was called New Schwabia. The Nazis were seriously concerned about the search for entry into the "inner world" in these places covered with ice. Moreover, there is still a legend according to which the Germans did not just find this mysterious entrance, but even used it to conspire their new weapons - those very UFOs, which are called “German flying saucers”. Proponents of this proposition link the expedition to Antarctica, undertaken by the Americans in the 1947 year, with the search for a German hidden Antarctic base. Hot heads claim that the expedition of the American admiral Byrd encountered the very same weapon that was hiding in the ice of Antarctica, which allegedly not only destroyed several ships and airplanes, but also for some time made Americans and Europeans forget the road to Antarctica.

These words can be treated differently, but there are still quite a few supporters of a conspiracological point of view from the research of Antarctica by fascist Germany in the world.

Years passed, the states that staked out their land of the Antarctic “land” decided to demonstrate to the world with the help of geographical maps and postage stamps that their territory was “officially” rooted in Antarctic squares. To those who attempted to master Antarctica as early as the 19 century, all new applicants were added. The world was faced with the need to sign a document that would regulate the rules of activity on the southern "extremity" of the globe. And in 1959, such a document was proposed for consideration.

Today it is known to us as the "Antarctic Treaty" or the "Convention on Antarctica." In accordance with this document, it was decided that no state in the world has the right to apply for Antarctic territories, and the entire mainland received international status. Antarctica has become a fully demilitarized zone. Since 1961, the teachings of warships and the military aviation "Below" the 60th degree was strictly prohibited. By the way, supporters of the "Hitler secret" see in the signing of this treaty a kind of pressure from the "new German weapons." According to their logic, nothing else could stop either the Soviet Union or the United States halving Antarctica in the early 60s. However, supporters of this surrealist theory for some reason are silent about why this very “new weapon” remained in the form of legends and legends and still has not appeared, so to speak, in front of a large audience.

However, we will not delve into the conspiracy, and touch on the more obvious aspects of the existence of such a continent as Antarctica.

In 80, the mainland also became a nuclear-free zone (the complete absence of power units using nuclear power engineering, including a ban on the appearance of nuclear-powered ships in these latitudes).

However, today, despite numerous prohibitions and restrictions, more and more people are interested in Antarctica, and not only for purely scientific purposes. It is not a secret to anyone that in the depths of this continent huge natural riches are hidden, to which world corporations are not averse to lend a hand.

In this regard, it is worth noting that Russia today has the broadest potential for the development of Antarctica, which can allow to conduct a truly scientific exploration of the continent, without turning it into a raw material appendage of the rest of the world.

Russia recently conducted a series of Antarctic research, which may be a new stage in the development of science. In particular, for the first time in stories Water samples were taken from the subglacial Lake Vostok. In February of this year, a prototype of water from Lake Vostok, which was collected at a depth of about 3770 m, was delivered to Moscow.

Due to the fact that the water of the lake has not had contact with the main medium for millions of years, it can be expected that the composition of this fluid can shed light on the ways of life formation in difficult geoclimatic conditions. Such success of Russian scientists was noticed in the world, and already in February 2012 Americans began to conduct their active scientific work at McMurdo station. At the same time, the American side was forced to ask for help from the Russian side in order to “punch” the path for the US ships transporting scientific equipment and food to the station with the help of the Russian icebreaker Vladimir Ignatyuk.

The success of Russian scientists in Antarctica was commented on by American diplomats, including Ambassador Michael McFaul and US Under-Secretary of State Madam Goethemuller.

Such an interest in Antarctica speaks about one thing: this mysterious land is able to give humanity answers to many questions. That is why Russia in no case should stop its research, content with what has been achieved. Advances in science are the best way to make the world speak of Russia as a real superpower. The main thing is that these successes should not become “nano-successes” again, as often happens in our country in recent years.

The fact that the power of Russia is growing in Siberia is already a fact! But do not forget that the further power of Russia will grow and these northern continents. And Russia, indeed, has the most powerful potential for the full development of these continents. That's where there is still to butt with the applicants ... angry

Yes, pegs of course need to be hammered, to pillar the territory ........ if we jump in, we can lose promising territories which in 50-100 years (maybe earlier) will remain practically the only sources of minerals, fresh water, etc.
The experience of Soviet polar expeditions in the exploration of Antarctica should certainly be used.
Well, of course, one should not forget that the Russian sailors were the discoverers of Antarctica!

Once again about the "Growth of Russia by northern laughing territories "----- The icebreakers of the LK-60 class will be the largest and most powerful of all built to date. Their characteristics will open up the possibility for year-round navigation on the Northern Sea Route. Construction of the first icebreaker is to begin at the end of this year.

According to the Director General of Rosatomflot, Vyacheslav Ruksha, the estimated cost of the new icebreaker in the amount of 1,1 billion euros has already been included in the budget of Rosatomflot for the 2012 year. This summer the company plans to hold a tender for the construction of a new icebreaker.

          On the track since 2018

If everything goes as planned, the contract for the construction of the icebreaker will be signed in September, and work is expected to begin at the end of the year, says Vyacheslav Ruksha. According to him, Rosatom believes that he will be able to enter the Northern Sea Route and other routes at the end of the 2018 of the year.

According to Mikhail Belkin, assistant director general of Rosatomflot, the plan includes a six-year period of construction of a new generation icebreaker, since the construction of an atomic icebreaker is an extremely complex process.

"Of course, you can use the services of foreign and Russian shipbuilding companies. We have already done part of the work at Finnish shipyards, and are satisfied with the results," he said.

The Vaigach icebreaker was under construction at the Wartsila Marine shipyard in Helsinki, while the nuclear power plant was installed at the Baltic Shipyard in St. Petersburg. The bulk of Rosatom's icebreakers were built at the Baltic Shipyard, including the last one - "50 Years of Victory", which was commissioned in 2007.

          Replacement of the "Arctic" class

Vyacheslav Ruksha presented the plans for a new generation of nuclear icebreakers in Murmansk at the international conference "Transit Navigation on the Northern Sea Route", organized by the Norwegian Center for Logistics of the Far North.

At present, Russia plays a leading role in the practice of operating atomic icebreakers to provide navigation in the Arctic and other regions with difficult ice conditions. For reliable operation in the future, Rosatomflot plans to further develop its fleet, which is an essential element of the infrastructure of the Northern Sea Route.

For this, new generation icebreakers are being developed. The LK-60 will have a capacity of 60 MW with a variable draft from 8,5 to 10,8 m. One LK-60 will replace one icebreaker of the Arctic class and one icebreaker of the Taimyr class, according to the Rosatomflot website.

          All year round

One of the main innovations in the design of icebreakers is that they are wider than icebreakers of previous generations. The maximum width of the LK-60 hull is 34 meters versus 30 meters for ships of the Arctic class. This feature will make it possible to carry larger tankers along the Northern Sea Route.

Exceptional power supply will allow LK-60 to cross the ice with a thickness of 3 meters, as a result, Rosatomflot will be able to open the Northern Sea Route for year-round commercial traffic. However, before this becomes a reality, it is necessary to consider a number of factors.

"It will be necessary to assess the environmental and practical aspects of the year-round movement, but the opportunity is certainly there," said Vyacheslav Ruksha, as www.barentsobserver.com writes ------------- God himself ordered! ...

Perhaps global warming will melt the main icy top on Antractida and access to rich natural deposits will be much easier than now. Actually, this is one of the reasons why the Anglo-Saxons fearing colds nervously squirmed and pulled their little arms to this mainland. First of all, they saw an opportunity not to study, but to rob.

About water samples from Lake Vostok, not everything is so obvious and understandable ...
First, the samples were officially taken not from the lake, but from a water "lens" that we met along the way. Secondly, it was stated that technology does not allow taking samples from the lake itself and all this is being postponed for another year.
But a number of questions arise ...
    1. Why is it allowed from the "lens", but not from the lake?
    2. The sampling technology was announced a few years ago ... Pressure in the well is vented, water rises from the lake, it is allowed to freeze, an ice core is drilled and it is already being studied.
    3. The fact that the well reached the lake was announced a couple of days before the closing of the season ... Now winter has come and all work has been curtailed (for sure?) It is possible that there would be no unnecessary questions ...

I am not a supporter of conspiracy theories, but there is a feeling that behind all these "samples from the lens" and folding immediately after reaching the goal, they are trying to hide something ... Well, or just buy time to study real samples.

Imagine the Pamir (if anyone was there), covered with a cap of ice 2 km thick. Is there a reason - to rejoice?
Antarctica is a mountain archipelago. The relief, most reminiscent of it, is the Pamir, Hindu Kush, Tien Shan-Pe-Lu.
A mass of open land - and besides frozen stones - nothing.
What is noteworthy, the Earth map of the Turkish admiral Piri Reiss (1513g.otrh) shows Antarctica without ice ... The coincidence with the glaciological studies of our time is .... stunning.
