75 years to the Road of life: how Soviet science saved the besieged Leningrad

The name "The Road of Life", which Leningraders gave to the ice road through Lake Ladoga, which began work on November 22 on 1941, is not a poetic image. This was the only way that allowed besieged Leningrad to survive and even help the front, which received the weapons produced in the besieged city.

The road began to operate in those days when food standards in the city were reduced to the tragic 250 g of bread per day for workers and 125 for all the rest, people began to die of hunger by the thousands. Soldiers on the front line received 500 grams of bread. But even to preserve these norms, at least a thousand tons of food was required daily.

To save the city and help the front, it was necessary to do an incredible thing: to create from scratch a whole infrastructure, which had to operate smoothly the whole winter, solving many problems. Such a project seemed difficult even in peacetime. In fact, it was a victory for science, and first of all physics, over Hitler’s tactics, which used hunger as a means of warfare.

"The construction of the ice road through Ladoga is an absolutely grandiose and bold idea even for peacetime, especially considering that Ladoga was not studied enough at 1941 year, including its ice regime. The largest lake in Europe has a very changeable temper in general and has always been considered very difficult in all respects, including for shipping, "notes Sergey Kurnosov, director of the State Memorial Museum of the Defense and Siege of Leningrad.

“The way of life is usually presented to the average man as a road on ice, along which one-and-a-half moths with flour go to Leningrad,” says Kurnosov. “But in reality it’s a huge infrastructure created literally from scratch that allowed supplying Leningrad and Kronstadt during the years of the blockade , and the Oranienbaum bridgehead, and the troops of the Leningrad front, and the Red Banner Baltic Fleet. The Road of Life has many components: this is the "air bridge" with the mainland, and the Ladoga military flotillaprotecting Ladoga communications, and the North-Western river shipping company, which carried out transportation during navigation, when the lake was not covered with ice; this is a telephone and telegraph cable, which provided communication with Moscow, and a high-voltage electric cable, which made it possible to supply electricity to Leningrad from the Volkhov hydroelectric station — these cables passed along the bottom of the Ladoga. This is the pipeline, which also ran along the bottom of Lake Ladoga, supplying the city with fuel. "

Leningrad, as a metropolis, has never been and could not be self-sufficient in terms of food, emphasizes the director of the museum. It was self-sufficient only as a city-front, because it could produce most of the military armaments itself.

When designing the Roads of Life, the experience of the past was taken into account, when ice tracks became a convenient crossing, sometimes more reliable and comfortable than the autumn-spring roads, ice tracks were also used for military purposes. “Was the Road of Life an urgent invention of blocked Leningrad? Yes and no,” said Kurnosov. “On the one hand, it was certainly an urgent invention. On the other hand, the idea of moving on the ice existed long ago. In St. Petersburg, before the revolution movement on the ice of the Neva in winter was a generally accepted phenomenon. These roads completely replaced bridges. "

But all the ice communications that preceded the Road of Life were short-term and were not designed for a huge transport and human flow that ran along the ice of Lake Ladoga in 1941 – 43.

Ice Intelligence

The idea of an ice track has been discussed in Leningrad since September 1941. "24 of September to AA Zhdanov, members of the Military Council of the Leningrad Front were presented materials in the form of maps and text on 34 sheets. Then we reported on the expected nature of freezing and the duration of ice cover preservation. On this day, the draft Ladoga Life Road was born" , - wrote in his memoirs the head of the ice service of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet, Mikhail Kazansky.

He played a big role in organizing the ferry across Ladoga. "Kazan distinguished itself both as an organizer, and as a designer, and later as a pilot - both water and ice. He accompanied the ships during navigation and supervised the maintenance of the ice route. He had the nickname Ice Grandfather, and the" grandfather "was at the time of his work Roads of life were only 25 years ", - said Sergey Kurnosov.

The preliminary ice route between Kobona and Kokokrevo was laid on the basis of materials provided by scientific studies and surveys by fishermen - the old-timers Ladoga.

"12 began to explore the state of the ice along the routes of the planned routes," Mikhail Kazansky recalled. "Each step of the scouts was a step into the unknown. Where the springy ice crust sagged under the feet of the brave and cracked, you had to lie down and crawl."

On the night of November 16, hydrographs harnessed to sleds and with compasses, maps, lines (cables) descended on the bending ice in the area of the Osinovetskaya flotilla base and examined first the route from Osinovets on the western shore of Ladoga to Kobona on the eastern shore.

Almost simultaneously with the sailors, the 30 fighters of the 88 th separate bridge-building battalion conducted reconnaissance of this route. The detachment left Kokorevo with a supply of landmarks, ropes and rescue equipment, accompanied by two experienced fishermen who served as guides.

The commander of one of the groups of this detachment, I. Smirnov, later recalled: "In camouflage weapons, hung with grenades, we had a warlike appearance, but ice pickers, sleds with poles, ropes, and lifebuoys made us look like winter men of the Far North. "The scouts moved one to three to five steps apart and after every 300 – 400 meters they froze in ice landmarks.

On the same day, on the orders of General A. Shilov, an authorized representative of the Military Council of the Front, machines with flour for Leningrad were sent westwards from the separate company to cross the lake. The first detachment of seven lorries (GAZ-AA), each of which carried seven bags of flour, moved north of the Zelentsy Islands on ice no more than 15 cm thick.

The drivers were standing on the steps and in case of danger of the car’s failure, they would jump out under the ice. The detachment drove from Kobona about 20 km, but there was no way further - the ice ended, the polynya began. The machines had to, after unloading flour on the ice, return.
On November 19, a horse-drawn sleigh train from 350 teams went from Kokokrevo. On November 21, he delivered tons of flour to Osinovets 63, but his way was extremely difficult: in some places, the carriers unloaded sacks of flour from sleds onto the ice, carried out empty sledding, transferred the flour on their hands and loaded them into the sledge.

It was obvious that the launch of automobile traffic on the thin November ice was an extremely risky undertaking, but it was not possible to wait.
Order No.00172 "On the organization of an autotractor road through Lake Ladoga" was signed on the evening of November 19 on 1941. Arrangement of the route, the construction of infrastructure had to go along with the launch of the ice road.

What is a trough?

Traffic rules on the Road of Life were developed not at the State Traffic Inspectorate, but at the Leningrad Physical and Technical Institute (Physico-Technical Institute, Institute of Physics and Technology of the USSR Academy of Sciences). The possibilities of Ladoga ice as a pavement were investigated by a group of scientists of the Physics and Technology Department headed by Peter Kobeko. Physicists determined how the ice cover on the lake deformed under the influence of static loads of different size, what fluctuations occurred in it under the influence of the wind and changes in the sweep-surge water levels, calculated the ice wear on the tracks and the conditions of its break.

To automatically record the oscillations of the ice, the scientist of the Physics and Technology Department Naum Reinov invented a special device - a bending device. He could record ice oscillations in a time interval from 0,1 seconds to days. With his help, it was possible to determine the reason why in the first weeks of work the Roads of Life went under the ice about a hundred trucks: the problem was in resonance, which arose when the vehicle speed coincided with the speed of the Ladoga wave under the ice.

The effect was also provided by the wave reflected from the coast and the waves created by the neighboring machines. This happened if the lorry moved at a speed of 35 km / h. Scientists also did not recommend driving cars in columns and warned against overtaking on ice. When moving along parallel routes, the distance between the trucks should have been at least 70 – 80 m. The help of science allowed to reduce losses, and the route was exploited to 24 on April 1942 of the year. The last cars passed around Ladoga with the thickness of ice of all 10, see.

Leningrad meteorologists have compiled a special weather forecast for the winter of 1941 – 42 for Ladoga, constantly updated information on the lake regime, made detailed maps with ice surveys and a forecast of its development for two and ten days. Ice load capacity was determined anew several times a month; hydrological bulletins were predicted every ten days with predictions of ice thickness: it was measured more than 3640 times for the first blockade winter.

From horses to buses

The freight turnover of the Osinovets cape - Zelentsy Island with a fork into Kobona and Lavrovo was determined by 4000 tons per day. The transshipment bases of the road were arranged in Osinovets, Vaganovo, Kobon, Lavrovo and at the station Ladoga Lake. From November 22, pedestrian and horse-drawn traffic was opened along the road, from 25-th - car traffic. From 26 November 1941, the order for the rear of the Leningrad Front, the ice road became known as the Military Highway No. XXUMX (WAD-101).

Food Trucks on the Road of Life

“At first, sled carts were allowed on the ice because he could not stand the cars yet,” says Sergey Kurnosov. “The ice, sufficient for the then road transport to move on, had to be at least 20 – 30 thick. See November November 19 1941 of the year went on a horse-drawn sleigh ride to the eastern shore of Ladoga, which returned to Osinovets 21 in November with flour for Leningrad residents. On the evening of the same day, a specially formed reconnaissance column of ten empty lorries went from Leningrad through Ladoga to 22 in November. the ice in the direction of Kobona came out already 60 machines, which returned, delivering 33 tons of bread to Leningrad. The ice road Life Roads began its work. Each of the one-and-a-half machines was loaded with only five or six sacks of flour - they were afraid that more endure, he bent under the wheels of gravity. "

The ice tracks were only in 12 – 15 km from the German positions, therefore the threat of airstrike or shelling constantly existed. Shells, bombs left openings, which were literally immediately frozen with ice in such a frost, the snow masked them, and sometimes it was absolutely impossible to detect them. The failed cars tried to pull out, but it was not always possible. Not only cars were saved, but also cargo: they were brought to Leningrad breweries, dried there and then used for baking bread.

The approaches to the Road of Life from the Kobona side were defended by the 1st NKVD Infantry Division, which defended Shlisselburg until September 8, from the Osinovets side - the 20th NKVD Division, which in October 1941 fought on the Nevsky Piglet. “The forces of sailors were brought up here, some of the artillery sailors were transferred to land units to service the artillery and anti-aircraft batteries that were installed along the route,” says Rostislav Lyubvin. “The huge forces of sappers constantly mined approaches from Shlisselburg.” She covered the road of life aviation Lenfront. From December 1941 to March 1942, pilots made more than 6000 sorties.

    Thank you for the article!
Rarely, topics raised on VO have an unambiguous relation to her readers, but "The Road of Life" is one of them. An unparalleled feat of people in the name of victory!
A deep bow to the people who lived, worked, fought during the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945! You are an example and a lesson for us.

Here is how the poet of Leningrad Anatoly Molchanov wrote:

And somewhere in Ladoga, in a white expanse
Ice and ice explode from bombs and frost
And the motors howl and the moans
And the cars loaded with bread
In a blizzard and shelling, without sleep and rest,
For the life and struggle of Leningrad is responsible.
And there was such a movement on the track,
As in peacetime on Nevsky Prospect.

I saw the photo more than once. Just now I thought: But what about them ... with the headlights on, you can see far away on the lake ... an ideal target for both aviation and artillery. Why without blackout ???

        Why without blackout?

What for? The Finns did not shoot at them. And the Germans did not have so many planes constantly hanging over the road.

          ??? The Finns were immature.
There was a blackout - special visors were made on the headlights.
          But these were calming measures.
The main thing - the road was guarded by the last drop of blood.
There was a line of reference points on the ice, advanced patrols lay in the snow, ...
German skiers tried to attack repeatedly ...

Here it is appropriate to recall the generally not bad film "Leningrad".
But historically containing a lot of outright nonsense.
In particular. there, the forebear could reach the Germans in one and a half truck. and then come back ...
And this is across the front line ...
Apparently modern "scriptwriters" do not fit into the head that for the sake of the Motherland one can not only arrange carnivals, but also really live and really fight in an icy environment.

The Road of Life began working in September 1941. Then the ships of the SZRP were armed with machine guns, the sailors stood behind them and fought off the Nazi aviation. Some of these steamers (small) with red crosses honored children. After all, the blockade of Leningrad began on September 8, 1941. The Nazis shot these ships. Our pilots gave themselves a vow not to leave a single fascist pilot alive from downed German and Finnish aircraft. They shot them in the air when they descended on parachutes. PS Kutakhov (our future Commander-in-Chief of the Air Force) told me about this. He fought on the Leningrad front. Tikhvin was freed from the Nazis on December 8, 1941. Working on the Road of Life has become a little easier. A hose was also laid along the bottom of Lake Ladoga, along which gasoline for tanks in Leningrad went. Our neighbor Parfenova A.V. Siberia was evacuated with her son to us. My mother and I left there at the end of August (my father evacuated us). She arrived, and her son died. Now evaluate the St. Petersburgers the role of Mannerheim in creating the blockade of Leningrad. Finnish troops captured the Kirov railway along the western shore of Lake Ladoga. If this did not happen, the blockade would not have happened. Finnish troops reached the right bank of the Svir River, cutting off Leningrad from food supplies. And the Minister of Culture of Russia tried to put up a memorial plaque for him. The river workers of the NWSC made a great contribution to the work of the Road of Life, so it is worth erecting a monument to them. Eternal glory to the defenders of Leningrad. I published an article on this topic in "VO" "Crisis month in the defense of the city." I have the honor. ...

Cutting off? Where does such knowledge come from? So, what is next? Has the road stopped functioning? Not. Here it is. That's for this and thanks to Mannerheim from the Supreme. The name of the marshal was personally deleted from the lists of war criminals. Mannerheim was not only not held accountable, but remained in power, respected by the end of his life.

... for surrendering Finland in 1944 and turning it against Hitler.

Was the Finnish army of one hundred thousand, almost without tank tanks, a serious obstacle for the veterans of Stalingrad and Kursk? In the 44th, our troops stitched the Mannerheim line like a butter knife. Mannerheim was allowed to turn weapons against Hitler. None of the German satellites have received such an honor. Antonescu and Mussolini were executed in a similar situation. The loss of manpower and equipment of the Soviet command never stopped. Even in April of the 45th they made their way through the Zeelovskie heights, suffering unjustified losses when everything was already decided. Give a reference about the loss?

        ??
        Who is respected?
Do not confuse political actions with a moral assessment.
In terms of morality, manneigram is a fiend of hell, however, like most Nikolaev generals, who, by the results of their worthless lives, betrayed everyone and everything.
They betrayed the monarchy - did not resist abdication, then betrayed their class - without defending at least the bourgeois republic., And without even trying to organize it, betrayed common sense - without defending the foundations of their way of life, betrayed their epaulettes - without defeating and not dying "for the faith , the Tsar and the Fatherland, "betrayed that same Fatherland - for the sake of saving their skins, having scattered around the world, many of them betrayed their families and the families of their comrades - it is not fashionable to remember Tolstoy's novel" Emigrants ", I will point out the world-famous American Miller - he figuratively wrote about the whores countesses.

It is not fashionable to talk about the moral character of the Russian nobility.
But if the nobility had moral principles, conscience and honor and intelligence .... there would be no populists, no "Black redistribution", no revolutions.

Read the true Russoils of Leskov, for example, all the beginnings of the collapse of the monarchy are immediately understood.

And now, corruption, nepotism and the stupidity of managers (the creative class, the elite of society - the language does not dare to call them that) clearly lead the country to the abyss.
One, albeit very strong, manager for Russia is very small.

This topic of the Road of Life is always near, since I live in Leningrad. I heard the stories of an elderly woman about how they took them out. Of all the buses of that day, only 1 reached the mainland.
There is such a poem --- The Ballad about Infernal Piece. Just to tears! And there was the expression "seven-year old man."

Greetings, Dmitry. Yes, the Road of Life. Two words, followed by human destinies, saved lives. My mother survived thanks to her. The stories are really hard to listen to, so the attitude towards mannerheim is unambiguous - an accomplice of the Nazis.
A low bow, honor and praise to the People who built, provided and defended this road.

29 March 1942 year in Leningrad arrived from the Pskov and Novgorod regions partisan convoy with food for residents of the city. The event was of great inspirational importance and demonstrated the enemy’s inability to control the rear of their troops, and the possibility of releasing the city by the regular Red Army, once the partisans managed to do this.

This train was also delivered to Leningrad along the "Road of Life". Through the Pskov and Novgorod swamps, through the front, but the partisans delivered bread to Leningrad. And then many of them returned to their units.
After the legendary first campaign, residents of the Novgorod and Pskov regions continued to collect food in the starving Leningrad. They managed to equip another 110 supply.
Already in September 1942, the "partisan region" ceased to exist. The Nazis simply wiped out the countryside and the people who lived there. Almost all the heroes who participated in the transfer of the food convoy to Leningrad died.

The article is good. For the authors, the remark: "the turret was removed from the tank, thus reducing the area of pressure on the ice" - clearly written by a humanist. The area remains the same, it is determined by the size of the tracks. But the pressure on the ice decreases, since the tower has already been removed.

It is not a secret for everyone else that the evacuation of Leningrad residents was carried out before the blockade with the maximum use of all opportunities, and during the blockade too.

And Hapfrey strongly recommend that you go through several in the winter yourself. tens of kilometers in snow and ice, on an empty stomach, after prolonged non-therapeutic fasting, without a supply of food, without enough suitable clothes and shoes, under the constant danger of air raids.

After such an attempt, there is a very high hope that one illiterate racket in this world and this forum will become less. lol

        Hello Latynina

        Hello Trotsky
It’s not a secret for everyone else that the evacuation of the inhabitants of Leningrad was carried out before the blockade with the maximum use of all opportunities,
Doubtful thesis. There were a large number of refugees from the Baltic States in Leningrad. Why were they kept there? Why weren't they sent to the East? Why weren't the factories evacuated? And therefore. Because they had no idea about the real state of affairs. How can you then talk about "using all the possibilities"
And Hapfrey strongly recommend that you go through several in the winter yourself. tens of kilometers on snow and ice, on an empty stomach, after prolonged non-therapeutic fasting

I went and more than once. Is quite real. And walked on the ice. And the fire from one match lit. The winter of the 41st was early and harsh. It was possible to leave. Why without clothes and shoes. Under communists, did people even have no boots? And a batting coat?
German spies went there perfectly and in all directions. And here is the question of life and death.
After such an attempt, hope is very high,

I don’t know what your hope is there, but I travel 10 km daily. 20 km is also real, but of course tired, but if necessary, it is possible. For the infantry unit, 40 km per day is the norm. So do not write nonsense.
So they didn’t let out of the city. Organize the supply, too, could not. The road is not through gorges and tunnels. A winter road. Pave there at least 10 tracks and carry food day and night. The convoy with bread passed through the front and through the lake without any problems. The bosses were crooked. Or there was nothing to carry. Since Voroshilov ordered everything. And Zhdanov. It’s good to have fools and stupid assistants during the years of victories and triumphs, and not when you need to work.

In April 1943, the Leningrad City Evacuation Commission summed up its activities: from June 29, 1941 to April 1, 1943, 1 people were evacuated from Leningrad, including 743 Leningrad residents, 129 residents of the region, 1 residents of the Baltic republics.

A unified evacuation plan, in fact, did not exist and it was carried out on the basis of a specific, rapidly changing situation at the front. Therefore, the evacuation was carried out in several stages according to the target directives from Moscow. The first of them followed already on June 27, 1941 and ordered to evacuate equipment and personnel of 7 aviation plants to the Urals and Siberia. On July 11, 1941, the State Defense Committee adopted a resolution on the evacuation of 80 plants and 13 design bureaus from Leningrad. After a month and a half on August 26, 1941, the GKO delegates all the powers to evacuate a special commission consisting of: V.M. Molotov, G.M. Malenkov, N.G. Kuznetsov, A.N. Kosygin, P.F. Zhigarev, N.N. Voronov.

On the day when the last branch of the railway was cut - August 29, 1941 - the commission only approved a plan for the evacuation of some of the most important enterprises from Leningrad for 10 days. It is clear that in the context of the embargo, it was fraught with great difficulties. A relatively small part of the equipment and personnel of 86 enterprises and organizations of the city was taken to the rear, 2 thousand 177 cars of dismantled equipment remained in the blocked city. In the future, some of the equipment and specialists were transported by air and along the "road of life".
From July 1941 to October 1943, 92 largest enterprises of various industries were evacuated from Leningrad, the capacity of the Leningrad industry decreased by 70% compared with the pre-war level.

Russian policemen 000 battalions 50, Vlasov 000rd div, air unit, officer school, center, headquarters. - 80. This is without the Cossacks. And without nats eastern legions. + 40th building! SS. Let's throw another 000 on them. Plus the saboteurs of the Abwehr - the release of the schools of Saturn, Merkur, 3-50 a year., Brandenburg. I haven't even counted hivi yet. Did you think you are our literate? Or teach to add in a column? And besides the Khivi, there were voluntarily forcibly driven off workers, numbering up to 000 million. Of course, they did not fight, but the German front-line soldiers were replaced at the machines. In particular at Junkers factories. We made planes. Are there any complaints about the quality of German aircraft? No complaints. Made to last.
You understand what it is like to go in a snowy field, for example, in a city long beautiful coat

I lived under socialism. And unlike you, I remember everything perfectly. Not everyone had shoes and coats with evening dresses. But quilted jackets and boots, old overcoats, terrible rough boots, bots, downy shawls were in every family. Can you imagine a German sample of Stalingrad? In an Indian sweater and a woolen shawl? Where did he get this, brought with him from Germany? No, he took the junk from the locals. So you can fight 2 months in this form. And 5-6 and even 10 hours on the ice you can’t go? You have some strange logic.

Beat prepared armored fists, and not sending troops into battle battalion. ....

This is your nonsense. There are 20 wagons in a train, 100 people in a wagon, 10 trains a day for a month we export more than half a million just trains. These are skilled workers to Siberia to new plants.
The population can easily leave on foot. May Day, your favorite demonstration saw. On a six-lane highway with a length of one kilometer, it fits 100, at a speed of 000 km / h, they travel 5 km per day. At 50 km fit a million. We have a narrower track, which means the people will fit 10 times less. But we don’t have to leave everybody in 3 day.
And it could be done. And defend an empty city, supplying only a soldier. But they didn’t. Because the Communists were afraid that they would be put to the wall for the collapse, and the victorious relay sent upstairs saying that everything was fine, a beautiful marquise. And only when the environment became a fact, it was only then that they began to think on this topic. Because they begin to talk about it earlier - immediately an alarmist and a defeatist. A coward - and to the wall of you. Cheaper Voroshilov and Zhdanov to miss the situation by substituting millions, but then reassuringly reporting, and then, well, what are we, we are nothing, the German is rushing. ... They saved their skin, and did not think about people.
"How did you get such an idea, to surrender Kiev," Stalin said to Zhukov. A million was surrounded near Kiev. The boiler lasted for a whole week.
And a month before, they had whispered the counter of Pavlov and Co., Smushkevich, Rychagov there. What an evacuation there! There was no time to climb with stupid initiatives.

                      2. Actually, the normal capacity of the most standard biaxial car of the sample of the 30s is about 40 people, you can ram up to 60 and above, of course, but with a complete loss of comfort.

                      3. The weight of an empty wagon is about 40 tons, people with the usual supply of belongings plus the load of life support - water, coal, food - bring the weight to at least 45 tons.

20 cars, about which you broadcast based on modern realities, are at least 900 tons, with a steam locomotive - per 1000 tons.

      1. "The Road of Life" is a very capacious and complex concept. The title "How Soviet Science Saved Siege Leningrad" is extremely accurate.
Even in the article there is a photograph in which several lines are visible ... There were many stripes in one direction. The strips had to be prepared - frosted over 1 meter thick, repaired after artillery and air raids ...
As much as they could and did.
But they made it so that with the beginning of spring, the road was flooded, but still functioned in parallel with the Ladoga Naval Flotilla, which had begun work ...
1000 cars ... I think there really were more cars.
That's just how the cars could withstand the tests on the radiator in the water ... The drivers did several flights a day, while the car withstood. Then the car was repaired by the bulkhead .... Then again a day on flights, again bulkheads ...
By the way, the GAZ lorry and ZISA ran.
Photos of Students on the Road did not see ...

      2. People are self-propelled ...
The NKVD troops were not admitted under pain of execution.
      The thing is, what happened.
A lot of people drove along the railway, but they could not be taken out. And people rebelled - let's go ... ourselves
Some people broke through the ice - no one reached the mainland.
If the hungry could reach, and the cars would not be needed, food stations, doctors everywhere, anti-aircraft guns, anti-aircraft crews, observers, camouflage equipment ...

      Dilettantism is normal.
They don’t even scold for this.
It is terrible to hear in the form of an unambiguous sentence - such as the authorities are to blame.
My grandmother and my teenage father were taken to the Kirov region along the Road of Life. The remaining relatives in Leningrad died.
