Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said that the plans of the main defense department means building up forces in the Arctic direction. According to Shoigu, by the end of this year, the grouping of the Russian Armed Forces in the Arctic will be reinforced by the inclusion of anti-aircraft missile and ship fighter regiments. RIA News quotes the Minister of Defense:
Currently, in this region (in the Arctic - approx. “VO”), work is ongoing to build up the group aviation and air defense. By the end of the year, it is planned to complete the formation of a naval fighter and anti-aircraft missile regiment, an association of the Air Force and Air Defense.
Sergei Shoigu noted that the build-up of the Russian Armed Forces grouping in the Arctic latitudes is associated with the protection of national interests, including economic activity, in the northern macro-region.
Meanwhile, work continues in the New Siberian Islands related to the erection and arrangement of the Arctic military campus, equipped with everything necessary for service and livelihoods. In addition, the special platoon servicemen carry out work on cleaning the islands of the Novosibirsk archipelago from the accumulated metal debris there (we are primarily talking about barrels of fuel that have remained in huge numbers on the islands since the Soviet era).
In June, the transfer of Rubezh mobile anti-ship missile systems to the Kotelny Island began.
