October 8 - Commander Day of the surface, underwater and air ship
The commencement of the celebration of this date is connected with the order of the Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy Vladimir Vysotsky on October 8, 2007 “On the introduction of the annual holiday of the Day of the Naval Ship Commander fleet". It is noteworthy that by that time Vladimir Vysotsky was just assimilating in his new position, as he was appointed Commander-in-Chief of the Russian Navy in mid-September 2007.
And it can be considered that already at the first stage of work, Vladimir Vysotsky accepted, in fact, historical a decision for the Navy, responding positively to the initiative of veterans and representatives of the Admiral's Club public organization. They suggested using the date of the battle of the combined squadron of the Russian, French and British fleets with the Ottoman Empire in the Ionian Sea on October 8, 1827 as the holiday date. The battle, which ended with the defeat of the Turkish-Egyptian fleet (as part of the Ottoman Empire), was called Navarinsky - by the name of the bay, located in the south-west of the Peloponessian Peninsula. Thanks to that victory (and according to the new style, the date of the Battle of Navarino is defined as October 20), Greece received an autonomous status, which later allowed this state to become independent from Ottoman domination.
In that legendary battle, the Russian segment of the combined squadron was commanded by L.P. Heiden, who had Dutch roots. After the battle, LP Heiden was promoted to vice-admiral.
The legendary Russian navigator and the remarkable naval commander Mikhail Lazarev took part in the naval battle in Navarinskaya Bay. Mikhail Petrovich during the Navarino battle was the commander of the ship "Azov". The crew of the Azov destroyed five Turkish ships and, in addition, successfully attacked the flagship of Muharrem Bey. For the courage and skillful command, Mikhail Lazarev was awarded awards from three states at once - Greece, France and Britain, and in Russia he was promoted to rear admirals.
Initially, the idea of creating a holiday concerned exclusively commanders of surface ships and submarines, but then it was decided not to deprive the attention of commanders of the sea aviation, which for the modern fleet plays a crucial role.
Does this holiday duplicate the Day of the Navy? In fact, he perfectly complements it. Indeed, in the short time of the official existence of this holiday, it was accepted as its commanders not only by warships, but also by the commanders of civilian ships. And, as far as we know, the initiators of the introduction of such a date into the calendar were not against such a “holiday neighborhood”.
If we talk about outstanding commanders of warships, people who have made a huge contribution to the security of the Fatherland, one could make an impressive list - from the very beginnings of the Russian fleet to the days of today. Significant place in this list would definitely take a man like the Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union, Sergei Gorshkov. This man for nearly three decades, commanded the Navy of the USSR - 1956 on 1985. Sergei Georgievich was one of the founders of the creation of the Russian nuclear missile fleet, which today is one of the components of the nuclear shield of Russia. Sergey Gorshkov - a true legend of the Russian fleet - Twice Hero of the Soviet Union, winner of the USSR State Prize and the Lenin Prize.
The outstanding commanders of sea and air ships, who left their important mark in the development of aviation and the fleet, are the pride of the Fatherland. By and large, the holiday that Russia is celebrating today is also a tribute to their memory.
"Military Review" congratulates all those of our readers who, in the course of their service, have reached the rank of commander of the ship. These people know firsthand what responsibility is, the importance of a modern decision and the pursuit of a goal. Happy holiday, commanders!
