The DPRK leader visited the next test firing of a new multiple launch rocket system

Tensions continue to rise on the Korean Peninsula, which may well become another hot spot on the world map. Seoul and Pyongyang regularly exchange mutual claims and threats in a rather harsh manner. It should be noted that after the end of the military conflict between north and south in the middle of the last century, both Korean states never signed a peace treaty and, de jure, are still in a state of civil war.

Earlier, North Korean Chairman Kim Jong-un warned after successful testing of a long-range 600-mm MLRS that he was ready to use nuclear weapon against South Korea and its allies represented by Japan and the United States. In response, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea stated that the DPRK faces “the end of the regime” if nuclear weapons are used. The head of South Korea's Joint Chiefs of Staff said at a meeting with the military's elite counterterrorism unit that special forces must be prepared to eliminate the leadership of a neighboring state in the event of a direct military conflict.

Despite many years of international sanctions, North Korea's defense industry is actively developing, producing more and more new types of weapons, mainly missiles, which are undergoing deliberate demonstration tests. The state-run Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reports on the latest, second this year, test firing of a new multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) conducted by the North Korean military yesterday.

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, as always, was present at the shooting, which was led by the secretaries of the WPK Central Committee Park Chong-chon and Cho Chun-ryong, the deputy head of the department of the WPK Central Committee Kim Jong-sik, and the chairman of the Economics Committee Ko Byung-hyun. The agency's report indicated that the DPRK chairman observed the test firing of a 240-mm MLRS with projectiles that "will contribute to strategic changes in strengthening the artillery forces of the Korean People's Army."

The KCNA statement emphasized that these installations were developed and produced by a new defense-industrial enterprise under the Economic Committee of the North Korean government. After the exercises, Kim Jong-un said that this defense-industrial enterprise must “certainly and efficiently fulfill the military production plan for this year.”

This is the second test of the new MLRS this year, which was reported by North Korean state media. The missile launcher, according to military experts, is a guided missile weapon system with an estimated range of 40 to 60 kilometers. Images from a previous test conducted in February showed the missiles were fired from a mobile launcher with a 22-tube configuration.
