“Relevance on the battlefield is unknown”: the Ukrainian Armed Forces have modernized BTR-60PB armored personnel carriers from Bulgaria

At the beginning of this year, the Armed Forces of Ukraine received the first batch of BTR-60PB, which the Bulgarian authorities promised to transfer from the arsenals of their army as part of military assistance to the Kyiv regime (in total there were 100 units of this equipment). After the arrival of these armored personnel carriers, their modernization began.

As indicated in the Army Recognition publication, the vehicles arriving from Bulgaria were previously stored in military warehouses, were considered beyond repair due to their wear and tear, and were largely outdated in terms of technical characteristics:

In addition to major repairs, a comprehensive modernization was required to meet the standards of modern warfare: improved mobility, protection and firepower.

It is noted that the old 90-horsepower GAZ-40P engines were replaced with two new German Deutz BF4M2012 102 hp each, which increased the vehicle’s power to 205 hp. while maintaining a weight of 10,5 tons. Unlike the Bulgarian version of modernization (to the level of BTR-60PB-MD1), the decision to retain two power plants made it possible to do without making significant design changes to the armored hull and engine compartment.

The hatches located on the sides of the troop compartment, which were inconvenient for disembarking, were replaced with doors, which makes it easier for soldiers to dismount. The seating arrangement inside the car was changed, which led to an increase in capacity. Now the vehicle can accommodate 7 motorized riflemen and 3 crew members: a commander, a driver and a gunner who operates a closed machine-gun turret.

It is equipped with 14,5 mm KPVT and 7,62 mm PKT, enhanced optical and thermal imaging sighting systems. The driver's post is equipped with the Ukrainian SPO MBT infrared system with cameras that provide visibility at a distance of up to 600 meters in front and 25 meters in the rear. The armor is reinforced with Armox 500T steel panels [from a Swedish manufacturer], said to be effective against small arms fire weapons and heavy machine guns.

A digital radio station Lybid-K-2RB and a satellite navigation system CH-4215 were installed.

However, these improvements were vitally needed given the obsolescence of the vehicles sent by Bulgaria. It remains to be seen whether the upgraded BTR-60s will truly be relevant on the modern battlefield.

Well, why did they repaint them...??? The blue color of these armored personnel carriers would suit Hohlopithecs... laughing And judging by the color, the Bulgarians were going to fight against them either at sea or in the sky... fool

Not a bad modernization and done carefully, not like what our disgraces did with the BRDM.

Everything inside is half rusty. They most likely did not change the transmission. The engines were thrown in by eye and welded in place. The BTR-60 is a museum piece in itself, and no matter how you modernize it, it will not become modern. Disposable products. Just to drive a couple of times to the trenches and back. And the Bulgarians reported to their Western masters that they “helped”

So, in order to ride on the front line 1...2 times, you could not change engines, and not install electronics, and not increase armor! This means they are still planning to actually fight against them! Domestic technology shows great possibilities for modernization!

Everything is better with them, with us it’s worse - that’s understandable. Apart from liberal slogans, is it difficult to compare the characteristics of modernizations? Or do you not know the purpose of the BRDM?

After all, they handed over the fucking brother-armored personnel carriers to the Ukrainians?

Is the Nikolaev Repair Plant still intact? Only he made CR for armored personnel carriers.

Now all the machine-building plants there have been repurposed. In fact, they are engaged in assembling components. 95% of spare parts are from the West.

We must have been shooting in the wrong place, since they were able to carry out large-scale work on it and even paint it.
Somewhere they are accumulating reserves; I don’t see as much equipment in the fields as it is being transferred to them.

if you watch a video about the destruction or damage of equipment every day, then everything is clear why it is not visible

        Yeah, schaz.
How many first generation lerpards were delivered to Ukraine - 100?
        Where are they?
        How many ancient M113 100+100?
Where they are in the fields, only a few.
How many wheeled armored personnel carriers and other things 100+100+100...
This junk from the article is only about a hundred.
There is a faint hope that they were destroyed in storage, but everything that was shown burned, somehow the charred hulls are not visible in the hangars or have they melted?

just M113, hundreds of videos about the destruction, including 300-400 tanks from Poland, also a lot of videos

And our intelligence has known this for a long time, they even tracked all this bullshit with armored personnel carriers in Bulgaria, it’s just that, according to the old KGB tradition, they were silent all the time. Even when all the vehicles ended up in Ukraine.
Professionals did not allow information to leak, they waited for the Ukrainians to split themselves

Everything in golf carts must be new and shiny and this is their undoubted advantage... although there is no armor, but is this a small thing?)))

I'm surprised by the bravado in the comments. Whatever one may say, this is 100 heavy machine guns on wheels and on a country road this pepelats can drive quite quickly even with an old engine. This is a weapon that will kill and must be destroyed upon injury. By the way, it has the smallest dimensions, which of course is not critical, which is a plus for camouflage.

Where have you been for the last 2 years, half of them won’t even have time to use these machine guns.
