Advantages and disadvantages of the Russian armored car "Tiger"

The Russian armored vehicle "Tiger" has been produced since 2005 and has a number of advantages that distinguish it from its foreign counterparts.

It’s worth starting with the fact that when creating a domestic armored car, much attention was paid to its cross-country ability. Thus, the Tiger uses automatically locking cross-axle differentials borrowed from the BTR-80. In addition, it also locks, albeit manually, the center differential.

Typically, all driveshafts, pipes and hoses are hidden inside the frame. Consequently, they cannot be damaged when hitting bumps, stones and other obstacles.

In addition, the designers of the armored vehicle borrowed from the BTR-80 a centralized tire inflation system. As a result, the Tiger can continue driving in the event of a tire puncture. In addition, tire pressure may be reduced for driving on soft or sticky surfaces due to the increase in the contact patch.

As a result, during the off-road competition, the Tiger even left behind the army Ural.

Initially, the Russian armored car used an American six-cylinder diesel engine that produced 215 hp. It allowed the Tiger, which weighed 5300 kg in those days, to reach speeds of up to 140 km/h.

At the same time, in 2014, the armored car received a domestic forced in-line four-cylinder diesel engine YaMZ 534710, producing similar power.

The Tiger does not have standard weapons. Therefore, it often acts in battle in an unarmed version.

However, the machine can be used as a platform for any weapons, if the mass of the latter, including ammunition, does not exceed 1,2 tons.

In particular, the Kord machine gun is often installed on the Tiger. However, an experimental version of the armored car with a 30-mm cannon was also demonstrated.

Finally, it is worth noting that for all its advantages, the Russian armored car also has a significant drawback. The thickness of its armor ranges from 5 to 7 mm, which protects only from machine gun bullets and barely holds back rifle bullets.

This is how they “trolled” the YaMZ brand... So the plant and engine are Yaroslavl

If you put armor on the “tiger”, then it will already be an armored personnel carrier.

I don't understand what you mean. I'm talking about the Tiger with the Cornets on retractable stands.

In principle, can there be cars without flaws in this situation? His armor is thin... but if you make it thicker, a bunch of other shortcomings will immediately appear. Or does the author think that it is better to make the armor thicker to the detriment of the rest? Then it should have been written that way, although there is an infantry fighting vehicle for that.

A vehicle with the 3rd protection class was ordered for the army, and for the explosives - with the 5th.
"Tiger" corresponds to its classes. What we ordered is what we received.

There is a video on YouTube showing an Army Tiger after being blown up by an anti-tank mine. The engine compartment was severely torn apart, but no people were injured (they walk near the blown up car, joking)

I read in Syria that it withstood 12.7, when the Syrians passed through dangerous sections at speed, there were only excellent reviews about it from the Syrians.

What if you use aluminum armor? what what
On the one hand, it is much more expensive, on the other hand, it gains weight, which can be used to increase thickness. We used it on infantry fighting vehicles, why not try it here too? what

The author of the note could have attached a photo of the "Tigers" shot down in Kharkov (kolonelkassad has it). Then the disadvantages would become clearer.
It would be more honest - to readers who know this story.
There, even from the photo, experts can see something.

The Pskov Heroes.. The tigers did not protect, they became a prologue to their death.
    Of course not just cars...

The tiger's engine is rather weak, it lacks traction, the brakes are also a weak point, and I don't even want to talk about the armor.

The only drawback is that they were not made enough for the army.
Still, it had to be made more armored, there were a lot of videos of downed tigers. Or how to protect tanks from cumulative shells. Maybe also a visor from drones.
Lately, tigers have hardly been seen in videos from the Northern Military District.
At the beginning, many tigers were shot down by the North Military District, judging by the military chronicle
To advance quickly, you need wheels.

      .

Well, they were hit with ATGMs, of which the enemy had countless at the beginning. They specially saturated it, because they provoked an invasion and waited for the influx of advancing equipment.
I remember a video from near Kharkov, in which in a couple of minutes they fired five javelins at a group of our fighters who had taken cover, even without equipment. They fired expensive rockets like lighting matches, without any thought of saving.

Yesterday in LiveJournal someone wrote an article about the Il-2, saying it was a useless plane, the armor was thin, and there was no bomb load. I say, what should have been done, remove the armor or make a flying tank without weapons? And here too. 5-7 mm is better than nothing.

I don’t understand the complaints - it’s called “Lightly Armored”, what are the complaints? Oh, did you use it as an assault transport? Well, you can attach a plow to a sports car and try to plow the ground....

Probably a lightly armored Tiger is still better than UAZ Hunters and loaves, which have no armor at all and are shot through by air

    How is that weak?
    Doesn't it eat enough fuel?
oh, yes - there’s not enough traction... so there’s not a word about torque in the article... only about power
that's why I wrote it - bots write articles

What's the problem? The engine brand is known YaMZ 534710. Open the instruction manual and find.
      Maximum torque
      gross moment, N.m (kgf.m),
      not less than 735 (75)/1400..1700
      Torque at
      rotation speed 1000 min-1,
Nm (kgfm), not less than 470 (48)
Before this there was a Cummins B-215
      Maximum torque, N*m (kg*m) at rpm. 700 (71) / 1500

So why doesn’t the author, before writing, read something himself?
For example, a good book on the topic: Sergei Suvorov, RUSSIAN “TIGER”. An armored car for “polite people.” Moscow 2016. There is one on Tyrnet.
