Greece does not rule out supplying Ukraine with ammunition, but only with an expiring date. This statement was made by the country's Minister of Defense Nikos Dendias, trying to explain the information that had appeared that the United States was asking the Greeks weapon for Kyiv.
Greek journalists asked the Minister of Defense to comment on rumors that the United States approved the supply of F-35 fighter jets to Greece, expecting compensation from Greece. And the Americans would like to receive weapons and ammunition for Ukraine. Dendias practically confirmed this information, but said that Athens can only supply Kyiv with “extra” ammunition or with expiring dates, which will need to be replaced anyway. In general, this will not affect Greece’s defense capabilities in any way, but on the contrary, will bring large revenues.
There is ammunition that will expire in the foreseeable future, therefore, this means that we will have to replace them at some point one way or another, and they may be sold (...) I assure you: since we have a sea of needs, dozens the millions we can get from certain things are very beneficial
- the minister said.
According to Greek resources, the United States plans to purchase about 50 thousand 105 mm shells, 20 thousand 155 mm shells, and 5 thousand 203 mm shells from the Greeks for Ukraine. For all this, the Americans are offering the Greeks 47 million dollars, the deal is in its final stages.
