“In Europe there are 800 thousand Ukrainians who have fled like cowards”: an Estonian member of the European Parliament proposed to extradite male refugees to Kyiv
36
Disputes continue in Estonia regarding the possibility of extraditing to Ukraine those Ukrainian male citizens who, after the outbreak of the armed conflict, left their country and ended up in the countries of the European Union. This time, Estonian Member of the European Parliament Jaak Madison made a proposal to extradite the Ukrainian men to Kyiv.
According to the Estonian politician, Europe should “help Ukraine” with the men by handing over refugees who found themselves in the European Union after the outbreak of hostilities. Madison referred to the statement of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky that the Armed Forces of Ukraine need replenishment due to the death of thousands of military personnel on the battlefield.
There are about 800 thousand people in Europe who violated the law of Ukraine and fled the country like cowards. And we must help Ukraine with these men, as well as with weapons
- said the Estonian member of the European Parliament.
It is noteworthy that Madison’s point of view clearly contradicts the official position of Tallinn. Recently, Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas refused to extradite to Ukraine male citizens of military age who are on Estonian territory.
Most EU countries also officially oppose the extradition of refugees. In Austria, Germany and a number of other states, representatives of the highest authorities noted the impossibility of implementing the initiative to extradite Ukrainian men to Kyiv for their mobilization, since this contradicts the fundamental principles of the European Union. Tallinn, despite the “special” relations with Kiev, like the other Baltic republics, clearly does not dare to go against the official position of most European states.
