Advantages and disadvantages of the 9mm Yarygin pistol

The pistol under the index 6P35 was developed as part of the Grach R&D program by a team of designers led by V. A. Yarygin to replace the PM.

In 1993, this sample weapons took part in the competition of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation and after lengthy tests and improvements was declared the winner in 2000. In 2003, the pistol, which received the name "9-mm Yarygin pistol" (PYa), entered service with the RF Armed Forces.

The mass production of PYa for the Russian army was launched in 2011. In addition to the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, this weapon is used in a number of Russian law enforcement agencies and law enforcement agencies.

In addition, the 9-mm Yarygin pistol received an export version and today, in addition to Russia, it is operated in Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Lithuania and the Republic of Belarus.

PYa is a self-loading pistol chambered for 9x19 mm. The initial velocity of the bullet is 340 m/s, the effective range is 50 meters. The magazine capacity is designed for 18 rounds (until 2004 - 17).

Despite the fact that the pistol won the competition and was put into service, the feedback from the operators about it is very mixed.

So, the indisputable advantages compared to the same PM include: less recoil force and toss, a larger magazine capacity, a 9x19 mm cartridge and high accuracy with intuitive shooting.

On the other hand, it also has significant disadvantages. In particular, frequent misfires when used "cold", delays in firing, heavy weight associated with an all-metal construction, sharp edges of the magazine jaws, which can leave cuts on the hands, as well as a high probability of breakage, since the pistol consists of many small parts.

When I worked in the police, oh, I wanted to have this Curiosity in use. I tried it in dash once. It’s not very good for me to give this to weightlifters. During exercise number 4 roofing felts 2, when you need to run 25 meters, and intuitively pull out the "whip" and hit the target at a distance of 25 meters, too, grandfather PM came to me more. Although it does not meet modern trends, the store is small, but pardon my French, it is reliable, like a Soviet can opener. My opinion, you can not dispute.

There is a PMM for 12 rounds.
There are magazine covers that increase its capacity (+2 rounds).

PM may be morally and outdated, but a very convenient, compact and very accurate machine in direct hands. And for the forces of law and order, civil circulation - this is generally a great car

About the pistol, developed 30 years ago and adopted 20 years ago, is still "reviews from operators about it are very mixed."
What kind of super-duper-nano-hyper "artificial intelligence shooter" is this that 20 years can't decide?
The answer suggests itself: it is either practically non-existent, or some kind of lobby is holding on to this "gad-jet" with its "teeth".

They can decide (Grach is an "officer" pistol), but only so many cartridges under the PM have accumulated that it was not possible to get rid of them even in 20 years (and, obviously, the factories were reluctant to switch to the mass production of more powerful 9x19 for Grach, given the need to preserve the release of 9x18 for PM / PMM).
Well, now, apparently, it’s completely pressed - nevertheless, in real conditions, the PM is only good for shooting himself (“according to rumors, he can’t even break through winter clothes), while Grach gives at least a minimal chance to resist the enemy (despite the small difference caliber, the kinetic energy of the bullet and the lethal range of the 9x19 Grach cartridge is almost twice as much as the 9x18 PM) - so mass purchases and equipment of troops went along it.

In the USA, in my memory, they rearmed 2 times, from Colt 1911 to Beretta M9, and then to Sig Sauer P320-M17 and Sig Sauer P320-M18, one of them is slightly lighter and shorter. Some special forces units were allowed to keep the Colt 1911, although it is heavy and there are few charges at the present time, the .45 caliber bullet has its advantages at short distances.
Policemen usually have several options to choose from, and most often they choose the Glock 9mm version (they are sold in different calibers). Since they are not paying out of their own pocket, they have a reduced resource of plastic parts, they will shoot the resource, write it off, and issue a new one, and it is easier to carry plastic than metal, and an 18-round magazine is very useful. But some still go with 6-shot revolvers, they basically don’t have delays when firing, unlike semi-automatic pistols.

Why is Yarygin's pistol bad? The fact that its customers tried to refute the truth established at the beginning of the Second World War - a pistol is not a military weapon. An attempt after the war to create a combat pistol in the form of a Stechkin pistol only confirmed this truth. And now the Ministry of Defense again stepped on this rake by appointing a competition for a new combat pistol, in which PJ won. But this is a mistake. The very idea of a combat pistol is a mistake.

Nobody refuted it: both the PM and the PJ are the weapon of last chance for an "unarmed" officer. The only difference is that the PM is only suitable for shooting, while the PM, thanks to almost twice the kinetic energy, gives a chance to "scare" the target at a 2-3 times greater distance. Which becomes especially important given the current trend to equip sabotage groups in "soft" bulletproof vests, or even full suits (PM against Kevlar is useless, while PY gives at least a chance).

Why couldn't they just build a pistol based on the Sig P226 or CZ-75? Plenty of gun manufacturers around the world have done just that, rather than reinventing the wheel. The patent rights for Sig have long expired (CZ-75 was not patented), so you can safely sculpt copies under the new name. The army and the police would receive a fairly reliable and effective weapon, time-tested. Or pride does not allow you to copy from foreigners?

As for unlicensed copies - this is from the series "it was smooth on paper."
We will have to restore the entire technological chain - the manufacturing process of each part, tolerances, steel grades. etc. And it's like no more work than the design itself.

That is why licenses are bought. It accumulates all the experience in the production of the model, which otherwise you will have to develop yourself.

Copying foreign firearms is not a problem for us at all. The development of design documentation will take no more than a few months, and most of the time will have to be spent on working out the technological chain, and not on digitizing the drawings. In Russia, a wide range of weapons steels is produced, which are in no way inferior to foreign counterparts, and sometimes even surpass them.
Licenses for the manufacture of weapons are usually bought by countries where before that there was no developed arms industry and design school. It is really easier for them to buy all the documentation and necessary equipment than to try to do everything themselves

“they are not inferior to foreign analogues, and sometimes even surpass them” - in this case, it is necessary not to “superior or not to inferior” but to be perfectly exactly the same, because only then all the details of the system will work as they should. And then there is such a thing as gunpowder, which is also different in each country, with its own physical and chemical properties. And the cartridges will have to be made not our usual, but specific infidels. So with a license it's easier, more reliable and cheaper.

During World War II and immediately after, the Americans tried to create a machine gun based on the M-42, but under their own cartridge: as a result, the not very successful M-60 was born. You have to do your own.

The M60 machine gun turned out to be extremely unreliable due to the creators' attempt to lighten it as much as possible. Because of this, all parts were designed to the limit of mechanical strength, which led to breakdowns in harsh operating conditions. What is the procedure for replacing the barrel in asbestos gloves worth)))

Rise off the floor, dust yourself off and read the instruction manual for the stormtrooper. Since the gloomy Teutonic genius did not bother to attach the forearm, a thermal glove was attached to the stormtrooper. For some reason, only on the left hand.

Can you show this page from the Sturmgever instruction manual where you need to change the barrel in an asbestos glove?
The mitten or tack was in the MG machine gun and was only needed in order to pick up the barrel slipping out of the casing. There are no other operations that would require a handle or handguard.

Bullet speed 340 m / s. Essentially, a fly swatter. An army pistol should be effective up to 200 meters. To do this, the speed of the bullet at the exit is not less than 400 - 450 m / s.

It looks like the author did not use PY, but this is generally a song -
as well as a high probability of breakage, since the gun consists of many small parts.
