Strength Test: Granite vs Bullet

An American video blogger posted a video on his channel in which he shoots a granite slab with bullets of various calibers.

The probability that during a firefight a fighter will have to take cover behind a monument, a tombstone or a fragment of a granite slab is quite small. Meanwhile, in urban battles, this happens. It was in order to test the reliability of such a shelter that the author of the channel ordered a 30 cm thick granite slab and used it as a target.

The first to test granite for strength was a 22-caliber (5,6 mm) bullet. Naturally, such a shot was made solely for the sake of experiment, since a small-caliber bullet could not damage a 30-centimeter plate. Actually, that's what happened. There were no scratches left on the granite.

The second shot was fired from a Beret APX pistol with a 9mm bullet. There was a small chip. Not more than 0,5 cm.

At the same time, calibers 5,56 mm, 7,62x51 mm and 10,36x77 mm left a recess of no more than 1 cm in the plate.

Finally, the turn came for the 12,7 × 99 mm (50 bmg) armor-piercing incendiary cartridge. This monster broke off a large piece of granite, but could not break through or completely destroy the slab.

The experiment conducted by the channel looks very spectacular. True, it is a pity that only Western samples were used to "destroy" the plate weapons.

Apparently, soon we will see American armor with granite protective armor plates, and this video presentation is a harbinger of a "joyful" event for US soldiers. laughing

Bronik with 30cm plates ... let them wear it, and let them not forget the same helmets. You can immediately write a name on the armor, the date of birth will do the rest later.

Granite is a fragile material. A line of any caliber will break it into rubble.

"High strength. This characteristic also depends on the size of the grains. Rocks with a fine-grained structure have a compressive strength of the order of 300 MPa. In this parameter, granite is significantly superior to other materials. For example, the compressive strength of concrete of the highest class B30 is only 39,29 MPa , clinker brick M1000 - 100 MPa.In simple terms, the stone can withstand a pressure of about 2200 kg per cm².Tensile strength is low and is only 3% of the compressive strength. If the extraction technology is violated, thin cracks can form in the stone, which practically do not affect compressive strength, but reduce tensile strength."

And what is it for? We're not talking about building pyramids.

However, crushed granite is included in the concrete along with steel reinforcement, which allows you to build things like the Ostankino TV tower, where the total strength is much higher than B30. In military affairs, this is important in the construction of fortifications and certainly cannot be used for bulletproof vests.

Yes, I just described the fragility of a granite PLATE! One. Reinforced concrete is another matter.

      You are confused with marble.

I didn’t mix anything up. Marble is also hopeless, but soft.

Fragile and soft? Glass can be cut with this soft stone, but the sharp corner will really break off, and the embankments in Moscow and St. Petersburg are lined with granite, and not only, how many years has the paving stones on Red Square been? And tanks drive along it once a year and Topol with Yars, this is not Sobyanin's tile

Marble glass? You've got it all mixed up here.

As for the burst from a machine gun or rifle... the article says that one (1) bullet left a depression of about 1 (one) centimeter (we will take into account 5,56x45 mm and 7,62x51 mm), and so Since the thickness of the slab is 30 cm, then it takes 30 bullets to break through the slab. And this is a whole store! Good fun, right? am

The blogger is well-known, he does not spare funds for various experiments. I also tested armor and helmets, including Russian ones. As well as weapons, starting with a mosquito. But his arsenal (quite impressive) is nothing compared to the arsenal of this grandfather: No more, no less, but the arsenal occupies 2 hangars, including mortars, recoilless rifles and even like a tank ...
