Lewis gun: Comrade Sukhov's machine gun from the movie "White Sun of the Desert"

The feature film "White Sun of the Desert" directed by Vladimir Motyl, filmed in 1969, has become one of the favorite films for many of our compatriots. Yes, what can I say, quotes from Sukhov, Vereshchagin and other characters in the film are sometimes used in our everyday life today.

At the same time, many fans weapons I remember the machine gun, from which the main character, Comrade Sukhov, “scribbled” on the Basmachi at the end of the film.

We are talking about a machine gun of the Lewis system, created in 1913 and in the same period adopted by the Belgian army.

In fact, the Lewis gun became one of the first light machine guns. At the same time, its creator, US Army Colonel Isaac Lewis, unable to convince the leadership of the demand for his offspring, left for Belgium, where he founded Armes Automatique Lewis, and then moved to the UK. The production of the machine gun began in 1913 at the factories of the British company BSA.

The Lewis gun weighed about 11 kg and boasted a rate of fire of 550 rpm. The maximum range of fire from the “comrade Sukhov machine gun” was 1830 meters, the initial bullet speed was 747 m / s. Drums for 47 and 97 rounds of caliber 7,62x54 mm were used as food.

It is worth adding that the Lewis gun, "lit up" in the cult film, was taken for filming in the Leningrad Museum of the Revolution. At the same time, museum workers forbade firing from this weapon so as not to spoil the exhibit.

As a result, in the film, Comrade Sukhov fired not from a Lewis gun, but from a DP-27 stylized as it.

Actually, the Lewis gun, depending on the country in which it was in service and the manufacturer, used cartridges 7,65 × 53 mm Mauser, .303 British or 7,7 × 56 mmR, .30-06 Springfield or 7,62 ×63mm, 7,92x57mm, Mauser or 8x57mm, 7,62x54mmR.

Actually, Lewis machine guns, caliber 7,69 mm, chambered for .303 British, this is only the British version ... but the release of this machine gun was not limited to this! There were other calibers, for other cartridges!

In the film "White Sun of the Desert" it was not Lewis who was shot, but a DP-27 made up for him with a casing.

.... and a ribbed a la Lewis clasp on the disk. This is clearly seen when Comrade. Sukhov from the top of the tank thrashed from this "DP-Lewis". In general, the camouflage of the domestic riflemen in the cinema is put on stream. Carefully watch the film "Road Check" - there, from the tower at the railway station, the "taxi driver" thrashed from PKM camouflaged under MG-42 - they also pulled the casing on top of the barrel, but the PKM butt burned the whole thing - MG has a very characteristic butt-emphasis, not to be confused with anything .....

PS in the scenes where the real Lewis is not shot from the "Lewis".

Hmm ... I'm embarrassed to ask (c) how did they aim with such a "pan" for 400 rounds? Apparently it blocks the aiming line ....

I think the sight should be shifted to the left (it's more convenient for the right-hander)

My attention was drawn to a carriage standing in the center of the yard. Four blacks were just harnessed to it. It was a long open landau with puffy tires, leaf springs and soft leather seats, made of expensive wood with traces of gilding remaining. There was something inexpressibly nostalgic in this luxurious thing, in this fragment of a world that has sunk into oblivion forever, the inhabitants of which naively hoped to move to the future on such vehicles. It turned out that the trip to the future was only successful for the vehicles themselves, and then at the cost of turning into a kind of Hunnic war chariots. It was these associations that gave rise to three Lewis machine guns connected by a rod, fortified at the rear of the landau.
I walked away from the window, sat on the bed and suddenly remembered that such chariots are called by the incomprehensible word "cart".
