German magazine explains why the US supplies Ukraine with limited arms
Despite the persistent requests of the Kyiv authorities, Washington deliberately limits the supply of weapons to Ukraine, the author of an article in the German magazine Focus believes. And this is not about a quantitative limitation, but about the unwillingness of the United States to provide some types of modern weapons and military equipment, or the supply of the simplest modifications weapons. And this is connected not so much with export restrictions, but with the White House's fears of provoking a direct military clash with Russia and the fear of a split among European NATO countries.
This is confirmed, in particular, by the Pentagon's delay in sending Abrams MBTs to Ukraine, which, even according to the accelerated schedule, will not receive the Armed Forces until autumn. Yes, and instead of the previously stated tanks M1A2 modifications Ukraine will now receive the older Abrams M1A1, and even without armor made from depleted uranium. A similar situation is observed with the delivery of M777 howitzers with full navigation to Kyiv.
However, some military experts consider such restrictions to be normal practice in the export of American weapons to countries that are not members of the North Atlantic Alliance. In their opinion, modern communications and navigation equipment is integrated into NATO command and control systems, and therefore can only be used within the alliance's operations.
But this theory does not fit into the sending of HIMARS MLRS to Ukraine with a pre-established restriction on the use of long-range missiles. Even if Kyiv itself managed to find somewhere missiles for these systems with an increased flight range, they would still not be able to use them by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, the author of the article notes.
An anonymous source in the White House explained such tactics of the Pentagon in limiting the sending of full-fledged weapons systems to Ukraine by the Biden administration's fears of an escalation of the conflict from Moscow, up to the direct involvement of NATO in it. Most of all, some European countries are afraid of such a scenario. Which, in the case of the lifting of artificial restrictions by Washington, could lead to a split among the members of the North Atlantic Alliance. The President of the United States, in particular, announced this scenario last year.
German military expert Gustav Gressel considers such a position of self-restraint on the part of the American leadership justified. But at the same time, he is sure that such a limitation in the supply of weapons to Kyiv gives the wrong signal to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
— says the expert.
Thus, the West shows that Russia can win simply by waiting a certain time and counting on the fact that military support for the Kiev regime will not only not grow, but will begin to weaken after some time, Gressel is sure.
