The Turkish parliamentary commission for external relations has approved a draft law that provides for Finland's membership in NATO. Finnish President Sauli Niiniste signed laws according to which the country is ready to become a member of the alliance. By signing the agreements, Niiniste expressed his full commitment to the obligations set forth in these documents.
Until recently, the only obstacle on Finland's path to NATO was the position of the Turkish and Hungarian parliaments, which refused to approve the corresponding agreement. However, on the eve of the presidential elections in Turkey, the parliament of this country nevertheless decided to sign the relevant bill approving Finland's entry into the military bloc. It is expected that the Hungarian parliament, following Turkey, will soon approve Finland's application.
The authorities of Sweden and Finland decided to abandon neutrality and join NATO in May last year. Currently, both applications have been approved by the governments of 28 of the 30 alliance countries. Ankara sharply toughened its position regarding Sweden's entry into NATO after the action with the public burning of the Koran in Stockholm, carried out with the permission of the country's authorities. However, recently the Turkish authorities have been declaring that they are ready to approve the entry into the alliance, first of Finland, and then, possibly, of Sweden.
