Ukraine requested the supply of Mi-24 attack helicopters from the Air Force of North Macedonia
Ukraine is in dire need of combat aviation, including the army to cover the actions of ground forces. Currently, Kyiv is targeting Mi-24 attack helicopters from the Air Force of North Macedonia, the Ukrainian Ministry of Defense would very much like to receive these machines.
The Ukrainian army aviation has almost no attack helicopters; the Soviet Mi-8s, which are actively bought around the world, are also used in this capacity. The potential receipt of Mi-24 helicopters, which are in service with the Air Force of North Macedonia, inspired Kyiv, which sent a corresponding request to the Macedonian government. Skopje is now evaluating all the pros and cons of a possible transfer of Soviet rotorcraft to the Air Force of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
The Ministry of Defense of North Macedonia confirmed that they had received a request from Ukraine, but refused to go into details, only saying that the military is currently "analyzing the Ukrainian request." According to open sources, the Macedonian Air Force is armed with 12 Mi-24 helicopters. There is no information in what state they are, but in Kyiv they are ready to pick them up in any, since Ukraine has the opportunity to restore.
According to the Macedonian press, the likelihood that the issue of transferring helicopters will be resolved positively for Ukraine is quite high, but not right now. The thing is that Skopje does not yet know what to replace them with, the choice in favor of Western helicopters has been made, but so far there is no talk of specific models. In general, as soon as they find a replacement, they will give up their helicopters. And according to the plans of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic, the replacement should take place by the end of this decade.
At the same time, the option of the immediate transfer of helicopters to Kyiv is not ruled out if North Macedonia is "asked" for this, for example, by the United States, promising to supply something in return, but later.
