The Riksdag of Sweden voted by a majority vote for the country's accession to NATO
In Sweden, deputies of the Riksdag (the country's unicameral parliament) voted on the issue of joining the North Atlantic Alliance. By a majority of votes, it was decided to join Sweden to NATO, according to the website of the Swedish legislature.
Parliamentary approval of the upcoming entry into NATO is a prerequisite for joining the kingdom to this military-political bloc. The votes in the Riksdag were distributed as follows: 269 deputies voted for Sweden's entry into the alliance, 37 deputies voted against, including representatives of the Left Party and the Environmental Protection Party.
The proposal to approve Sweden's entry into the North Atlantic Alliance was earlier made by the Riksdag Foreign Affairs Committee. He stressed that he shares the position of the country's leadership on joining the alliance, noting that in peacetime there are no grounds for deploying permanent NATO bases or a nuclear weapons on the territory of Sweden.
Recall that on May 17, 2022, Sweden and Finland applied to join NATO. But so far it has not yet been ratified by two members of the alliance - Hungary and Turkey. Both the Hungarian and Turkish authorities are ready to agree with Finland joining the alliance, but so far they are blocking such a possibility for Sweden. In Turkey, they are offended by Stockholm after the provocation with the burning of the holy book of Muslims and accuse Sweden of having close ties with the Kurdish movement.
If Sweden is nevertheless accepted into the North Atlantic Alliance, the bicentennial story her neutrality. Although the military cooperation between Stockholm and NATO has been carried out for a long time and, in fact, both Sweden and Finland are part of a single military machine of the "collective West", albeit without formal membership in the alliance.
