An American analyst called the factor in the successful use of the B-21 Raider bomber
The American B-21 Raider bomber may have a great future, but much will depend not so much on the technical features of the aircraft, but on the pilots, regardless of whether they will pilot the aircraft personally or remotely. This is written by an American analyst, former pilot Philip Handleman in the publication 19fortyfive.
Back in 2016, the author of the article notes, a conference was held at which the then US Secretary of the Air Force, Deborah Lee James, announced the abandonment of the principle of consistent designation of bombers. Although the new bomber was supposed to receive the designation B-3, it was decided to call it the B-21, which hinted that we were facing an aircraft of the 21st century.
Interestingly, back in the late 1930s, in service with the American military aviation appeared bomber XB-21, developed by North American Aviation. It had a crew of six and was powered by two Pratt & Whitney Twin Hornet engines.
XB-21, nicknamed Dragon, writes Handleman, was a very promising project. In terms of its characteristics, it surpassed its competitor - an aircraft from Douglas Aircraft. However, the latter cost less, so the Pentagon opted for the Douglas B-18A Bolo bomber. Then the NA-40 project was developed, which took into account the lessons of the XB-21. Finally, the NA-62 arrived, which became the B-25.
But the B-25 also had certain problems, for example - it was not adapted to work from the deck of an aircraft carrier. However, he took part in the legendary raid on Tokyo, which was of great importance for the victory over Japan. The readiness of bomber crew members to risk their lives and ruthlessly destroy the enemy played a major role in the Tokyo raid, and the American author sees this as an important basis for his reflections on the future use of the B-21 aircraft.
Speaking about the prospects of the B-21, Handleman notes that they will largely depend on the skill of the pilots. This does not detract from the importance of the technical characteristics of the aircraft, but makes us think that the military spirit of the crew in any case determines the outcome of the battle in the air, the American analyst believes.
