In the US, again reflect on the modernization of the Zumwalt-class stealth destroyers
In the United States, they do not lose hope of attaching "super destroyers". Some congressmen are already expressing considerations about sending these ships "for scrap" altogether, as happened with the Independence and Freedom types.
Last month, the US Navy awarded HII Ingalls Shipbuilding a $10,5 million contract to plan a period of modernization for Zumwalt and Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001). The Navy said it plans to launch hypersonic missiles from Zumwalt-class destroyers no later than 2025, and from Virginia-class attack submarines no later than 2028. It is planned to place at least 12 missiles aboard each destroyer of the specified class.
No other details of the contract were disclosed. Apparently, the idea of arming these "white elephants" with laser weapons, an electromagnetic gun was considered too fantastic, even for such fantastically expensive ships. However, the new agreement also raises strong doubts both in terms of the timing and the very possibility of implementation.
At the moment, only one successful test of a hypersonic missile is known, which exceeded the speed of 5 M. But this is an air-launched missile. If the speed of the carrier aircraft, about 5 km / h, is taken away from the speed of 1000 M, then for the marine version it is by no means hypersonic. Whether it will be brought "to mind" and in what timeframe is still unknown.
It is not clear yet with the issue of placing promising missiles on board destroyers. In regular UVP Mk. 41 they will not fit - at least in the dimensions that we are talking about now. There were rumors that the volumes in the bow, freed up after the dismantling of the artillery systems, were used to accommodate missile weapons. But so far these are only rumors, and the guns themselves are still in their regular places. They want to supplement the upcoming modernization with new radars, replace the SPY-3 radar with SPY-6 (v) 3.
Thus, stealth destroyers, each costing up to $4 billion, are again being reformatted and modernized in the United States. Now with the help of sea-based hypersonic weapons, which do not exist yet...
