American inspectors warned Kyiv about the need to account for military and economic assistance received by Ukraine
Inspectors General of the Ministry of Defense, the State Department and the US Agency for International Development visited Kyiv. The main purpose of the visit of high-ranking Washington controllers was to inform the country's leadership that the time for uncontrolled receipt of financial and military assistance was over. The inspectors warned Kyiv to account for the military and economic aid it received.
In a special feature on the visit of U.S. officials to the Ukrainian capital, The Washington Post interpreted Washington's message to President Zelensky as follows:
It was after this that the President of Ukraine personally initiated a large-scale anti-corruption campaign throughout the country in government bodies and among businessmen, during which mass searches, dismissals and detentions of officials and entrepreneurs are carried out.
The quite transparent purpose of the visit was also confirmed by Inspector General of the State Department Diana Shaw, saying that the trip "given us the opportunity to directly convey to the Ukrainian government the expectations of American taxpayers regarding transparency and accountability." The need to step up control over the use of multibillion-dollar US aid to Ukraine Shaw called the eradication of "any fraud, waste or corruption" that could interfere with Ukraine's victory.
A year after the start of the special operation in Ukraine, the American government started talking about the need to figure out where the money of American taxpayers actually goes, under pressure from the Republican Party, which gained a majority in the lower house of the US Congress following the midterm elections. Prior to this, the White House only stated that everything should be checked, but each time representatives of the Biden administration added that they "completely trust Kyiv."
However, the Democratic Party is still confident that there is still nothing to worry about. So, according to Senator Chris Koons, he is not particularly puzzled by the fact that the American weapon enters the black market "in no small part because Ukrainians use everything we send them," according to WP.
Indeed, everyone uses it, but according to independent experts, no more than half of what the West allocates to Ukraine is actually spent on the stated goals.
