Switzerland intends to revise relations with Russia in the next foreign policy strategy
The authorities of Switzerland, which for centuries remained neutral, at least publicly, in military conflicts, decided to completely abandon this status. Immediately after the start of the Russian special operation, Bern took an openly pro-Ukrainian position. President Ignazio Cassis, visiting the capital of Ukraine, showed support for the Kyiv regime. And although the leadership of Switzerland still refuses to directly supply weapons to Kyiv, a parliamentary commission recently approved the re-export of goods produced in the country weapons to Ukraine.
Expressing full loyalty to NATO allies in support of Ukraine, the Swiss government went to the further deterioration of relations with Russia. The country's Foreign Ministry released a report on the results of 2022, which stated that Switzerland intends to review relations with the Russian Federation in the next foreign policy strategy. Berne justifies this by the fact that Moscow "refused to accept the mandate of a protecting power to protect the interests of Ukraine," which indicates the absence of the Russian leadership's desire for a peaceful resolution of the conflict.
- the document says.
At the same time, the report emphasizes that Switzerland condemns the Russian special operation in Ukraine and fully supports Western sanctions against the Russian Federation.
Earlier, Bern and Kyiv agreed that Switzerland would represent the interests of Ukraine in Russia at the diplomatic level. This required the consent of Moscow, but, as emphasized in the Swiss Foreign Ministry, it did not follow.
Berne noted that from the very beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, Switzerland was ready to provide the parties with its services, in particular, a negotiating platform, as well as substantive and expert support during possible negotiations, but Russia refused this. The fact that President Zelensky banned any negotiations with the Russian Federation at the legislative level, with the full approval of the West, is naturally not said in the Swiss Foreign Ministry.
