The US Navy used lasers against an Iranian IRGC boat in the Strait of Hormuz

On December 5, US Navy ships used lasers against an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy patrol boat in the Strait of Hormuz. An Iranian boat tried to temporarily "dazzle" American ships with a searchlight.

An official statement from the US Navy command claims that an Iranian boat belonging to the IRGC Navy took "unsafe and unprofessional" actions in an attempt to obstruct the movement of two American ships in the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian sailors began to shine a searchlight dangerously close to American ships.

According to the US Army Central Command, the destroyer USS The Sullivans and the ship of the Expeditionary Naval Base USS Lewis B. Puller participated in the incident. To respond to the Iranian boat, American ships used sound warnings and so-called non-lethal lasers. In the end, they continued their journey in the Strait of Hormuz without further incident.

US Central Command spokesman Colonel Joe Buccino said that such actions of the Iranian fleet typical of Tehran's policy in the Middle East.

What is not clear is what the US Navy ships are doing in the Strait of Hormuz, many thousands of kilometers from the American coast.

Note that this is not the first incident in recent times. So, last week, an American warship stopped an attempt to transport 50 tons of ammunition on a ship heading towards Yemen in the Gulf of Oman. The ship was carrying about 1 million rounds of ammunition for 7,62-mm rifles. weapons, 25 rounds of 000mm heavy machine gun rounds and a large amount of other ammunition.

The IRGC Navy, in turn, regularly tries to impede the movement of American ships near Iranian territorial waters. The command of the IRGC has previously announced an increase in the combat capability of the Iranian fleet in the context of the necessary opposition to American activity in the region.

In terms of laser weapon capabilities, the US Navy is currently working on a large number of projects to equip warships with laser weapons that can disable or destroy enemy systems. For example, Lockheed Martin has created a high-energy laser with a built-in optical dazzler - specifically for the needs of the US Navy. Such lasers, known as HELIOS, were transferred to the US Navy in August 2022 for installation on warships.

The US Navy claims that the HELIOS laser improves the performance of the overall combat system of the ship, which contributes to the overall increase in combat capability and the safety of ships and sailors of the US fleet.

According to the manufacturer, the HELIOS multi-purpose system will provide tactically important combat capabilities of the laser weapon system as an integral part of the multi-layered defense architecture of US warships.

Americans should not sink Iranian boats, otherwise oil traders may panic. Especially since the price ceiling on oil exchanges does not give results. The market is in anticipation of a recession. In the Persian Gulf, every shot is echoed on the exchanges.

How close is it allowed to bring a searchlight beam to an American ship?

        so-called non-lethal lasers

These most "non-lethal" easily burn out the retina. The person will become blind. As well as spoiling optics using semiconductor matrices (and this is any modern camera)
A good precedent - the Americans themselves said that the use of such lasers for "scare" is acceptable. So the Iranians can use them too. instead of a spotlight. After all, "non-lethal"

I can imagine what a huge risk the US Navy was exposed to under the Iranian searchlight. Poor sailors, such torture

And what kind of lasers are there that are not lethal? Chinese green pointers? And grandmothers sawn for several billion? It would be better if American blacks and LGBT people were handed out to the disabled.

      You laugh in vain.
Non-lethal ones are the same as lethal ones, only less energy is supplied to them.
If the Americans already know how to drive away the Iranians with lasers, then they will succeed in a war with us.

          Yes you what.
What is this entire article about?
If you peel all the husks, then the point is that the Iranians tried to blind the Merikos with lanterns.
And the Merikos responded by blinding them with lasers.
After that, the incident was over.
What other proof of application efficiency do you need?

"What more proof do you need?"
Proof of effectiveness. What does "blind" mean? Those. the Iranian tried to blind the Yankees with a flashlight, and they blinded him with a laser, hence the conclusion (excuse me, banal and meaningless) - in blinding a laser is more effective than a flashlight, from the "Open Secret" series.

After the use of lasers, the Iranians left.
              What conclusion can you draw?
My conclusion is this: the laser was effective.

The Iranians directed a searchlight towards the American ship to see who it was again wandering not on their territory. In response, the Americans turned on the siren and used "non-lethal lasers" - their searchlights. The incident has ended.

      Something like this?

In the place of the Iranians, I would buy five / ten watt Chinese laser pointers, 10-20 pieces, combine them into a package and also shine in the direction of mattress covers ...

Joking aside, however, I have such a pointer (1 wt), it burns through paper up to 3 meters, and even once with its help I made a fire in the forest, because I forgot the matches at home .. It looked enchanting. :)
But there are pointers and more help. They will not be able to ignite anything at a great distance, but they can completely blind ... Perhaps even irrevocably in relation to vision.

While they are neighing and talking about the “magic” atmosphere, lasers are being serially installed on US and Israeli ships, European countries and China, one step away from delivery to the series.
The ODIN complex was probably used, it just went into the series.

Simple optics do not even darken.

Simple optics will not have time to react and a powerful beam will burn out or overheat the matrix.
The phrase "non-lethal" excludes the ability of serious damage, but does not prevent it from doing damage. A laser beam, two hundred watts, with a short exposure to the eye or matrix, can damage them, and at higher power, leave them completely without vision.

It would have been a lethal weapon. And why are you so wound up with a real description of the work of non-lethal samples of laser weapons? Did you think that no one knows how it works, or your ideals do not allow the idea that the Americans are capable of violating the conventions they themselves invented? wassat

So no one was killed. The Iranians swam to their Iraniyu. The definition of non-lethal weapons was given by the Americans to them and refine their definition. Moreover, if there is a description that the Iranians were able to blind, then there was no result of the action of non-lethal weapons. This is the most harmless weapon that could not even blind anyone.

You have porridge in your head. The report was written by the American media, not the Iranians. The effect of laser guns on optics and eyes during unsuccessfully organized shows can be found on the Internet, where you can find many cases. The fact that something no less powerful will be installed for warships is even nothing to discuss.
You also assume that the Americans put a laser pointer on a warship.
In general, you are trying from a realistically possible situation, based on the real capabilities of such systems, to fall into the opponent's ordinary trolling, opposing fantasies on the topic "this cannot be" as an argument.

Yes, the laser can disable vision permanently or temporarily, depending on the power, or damage optical devices. This is known. But the possibilities of the laser are not limited to this, there are still some possibilities. But in this particular case, I would not guess on the coffee grounds. Foreign journalists, with all their desire, did not do this and others should not

Here everything is clear as day that the Iranians are to blame for everything. After all, the Strait of Hormuz is a primordially American land, or rather a strait. And nothing that from him to Fashington more than 11 km.
So, last week, an American warship stopped an attempt to transport 50 tons of ammunition on a ship heading towards Yemen in the Gulf of Oman.

Again, the original American Gulf of Oman. It can not be in any other way. And the fact that neutral waters is nonsense. After all, everyone knows that any neutral waters are the property of the United States, where American bandits, pirates and terrorists can stop and seize ships of other countries at will.
