The United States is unhappy with India's preparations for the commissioning of Russian S-400 air defense systems
The US State Department called India's purchase of S-400 anti-aircraft missile systems from Russia as a destabilizing factor. Against the backdrop of tensions between Russia and Ukraine, Washington expressed concern about such actions by the Indian side. This is understandable: India is traditionally viewed by the United States as an important partner in Asia, including in terms of countering the Chinese threat. However, India has long-standing good relations with Russia, including in the field of military-technical cooperation.
Now the United States is expressing dissatisfaction with the fact that India is preparing for the commissioning of Russian air defense systems.
Back in October 2018, India signed an agreement to buy S-400 air defense systems from Russia in the amount of $5 billion. New Delhi hopes that these air defense systems will be able to protect the country's most important facilities in case of aggravation of relations with neighboring China. Therefore, India pays great attention to both the modernization of its air and missile defense, and the acquisition of new aircraft in order to expand the country's air force fleet.
In the case of Turkey, the United States reacted instantly: they blocked the possibility of buying F-35 fighters. With India, the Americans turned out to be more restrained, but they still express their dissatisfaction quite specifically. According to US State Department spokesman Ned Price, Washington has not yet made a decision on this deal, but is already discussing it with the government of India.
Price also urged other countries of the world to avoid new large deals on the purchase of Russian weapons. However, the Indian authorities are pragmatic: the security and defense of the country, especially in the face of difficult relations with China, is in the first place for them. Therefore, Washington should hardly expect India to listen to its opinion.
Moreover, New Delhi is well aware that Washington will not impose any sanctions on India, since the United States now does not have so many really strong partners in the Asia-Pacific region. Spoiling relations with India against the backdrop of problems with Russia and China would be a very wrong decision for the United States. Yes, and the market for the American weapons India is extremely attractive.
