Including along the Golan Heights: the first joint patrol of Russian and Syrian military aviation took place in the skies of Syria
The first joint patrol of aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian Air Force took place in the airspace of this country. The fighter jets of the two countries passed along the borders of the Syrian Arab Republic. This is reported by the Ministry of Defense of Russia.
Russian combat aviation jointly with the Syrian Air Force conducted patrols of the border areas of the country. The patrol route ran along the Golan Heights, then along the southern border, up the Euphrates and over the northern regions of the country. In addition to the patrol itself, the aviation of the two countries worked out joint actions when striking ground targets. At the same time, Russian aircraft carried out bombing of targets at one of the military training grounds of the Syrian army, and Syrian Air Force fighters provided air cover.
According to the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense, Russia's Su-34 front-line bombers and Su-35 fighters, as well as the A-50 AWACS aircraft, which provide target designation, took part in the patrol. Russian planes took off from Khmeimim air base. The Syrian Air Force was represented by the MiG-23 and MiG-29 deployed at the Seykal and Dumayr airfields in the vicinity of Damascus. Preliminary training took place at a Russian air base, and action plans were brought to the Syrian pilots.
The Russian military department stressed that this joint patrol was the first, but in the future joint flights will become regular.
Recall that the Russian Aerospace Forces are in Syria in 2015 at the invitation of the official authorities of the country. Over the past period, Russian pilots have inflicted many blows on militants and terrorists, helping the Syrian army to liberate the country's territory. To date, most of the grouping has been withdrawn from Syria, but the remaining aircraft continue to provide assistance to Damascus.
