Estonia plans to transfer 122-mm towed howitzers to Ukraine
Estonia intends to continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine against the backdrop of the "Russian threat". Following the Javelin anti-tank systems, Tallinn announced plans to transfer 122-mm towed howitzers to Kiev. The German press writes about it.
Estonia plans to send howitzers to Ukraine, but there is one problem. The thing is that these artillery pieces were originally made in the GDR, which means that they cannot be transferred without the permission of Germany. In Tallinn, a corresponding request was made and sent to the German Ministry of Defense, where it is being studied. As stated in the press service of the German military department, the request must also be "coordinated" with Finland.
We are talking about Soviet D-30 howitzers of 122-mm caliber, produced in the German Democratic Republic, after the unification of Germany in the 90s sold to Finland, since the caliber did not fit NATO standards. The Finns, in turn, resold these howitzers to the Estonians, on whose balance sheet they are listed. In total, according to open data, Estonia is armed with 14 D-30 howitzers.
How many artillery installations the Estonians plan to transfer to Ukraine is unknown. However, the transmission may fail. If the United States, which approved the transfer of Estonian Javelin anti-tank systems to Kiev, themselves advocate the supply of weapons Kiev, Germany takes the exact opposite position, declaring the inadmissibility of arms supplies to Ukraine.
Estonian Defense Minister Kalle Laanet also agrees that Berlin is unlikely to allow the transfer of howitzers to Kiev. According to him, there will be no permission from Germany, and without the consent of Berlin, Estonia cannot supply weapons.
