Romania intends to purchase used F-16 fighters that have served more than 35 years
The Romanian parliament will have to approve a deal from the Ministry of National Defense to acquire 32 combat aircraft from Norway, worth almost half a billion euros. Romania intends to purchase from its NATO ally used F-16 fighters that have served more than 35 years.
This is reported by the Romanian edition Digi24.
Before that, Bucharest was negotiating the acquisition of the F-16 with other European countries that are members of the North Atlantic Alliance. As a result, the planes of the Norwegian Air Force were chosen. This caused bewilderment among the Romanian military experts, who pointed out that for aircraft, some of which are more than 40 years old and which have been operated in the harsh Norwegian climate, it is expensive.
Of the 454 million euros that Romania will pay, 354 million will go to Norway for the fighters themselves, and the remaining 100 will go to the United States for a logistics support package and modernization services.
Norway has put up for sale its fighter Aviationas it replaces the outdated F-16s with the newest F-35s. Recently, the American company Draken took delivery of 12 such fighters, while Romania intends to acquire the rest.
The Romanian Air Force currently has 17 used F-16 A / B aircraft purchased from Portugal between 2016 and 2021.
As the Romanian Ministry of Defense justifies, despite the 40-year service life, the Norwegian fighters have been upgraded to MLU standard in the "advanced" M6.5.2 configuration. It enables the launch of modern Laser-JDAM smart bombs and AMRAAM-120D long-range air-to-air missiles.
Earlier, the Norwegian military expressed a desire that their F-16 aircraft, after being replaced by the F-35, would continue to be used by the Allies in the North Atlantic Alliance.
