Israel Defense Ministry approves the purchase of American heavy transport helicopters CH-53K King Stallion
Israel can finally begin the procedure for the purchase of American heavy transport helicopters CH-53K King Stallion, the ministerial arms commission approved the purchase of helicopters for the IDF. A positive decision was made on Monday, November 29th.
The CH-53K King Stallion helicopter is to replace the CH-53 Yas'ur helicopter, which entered service in 1970, in the Israeli army. The delivery time has not yet been determined, the whole point is that Israel wants to introduce new generation avionics on new helicopters, developed by local companies, and the US Department of Defense has not yet given permission for this. In total, it is planned to purchase from 10 to 15 helicopters.
The fact that Israel chose the CH-53K King Stallion as a new transport helicopter became known back in 2017. The other two contenders were the Bell Boeing V-22 Osprey tiltrotor and the Boeing CH-47 Chinook "flying carriage". In February of this year, the Minister of Defense approved the choice of a new transport helicopter, now it comes to purchasing.
CH-53K King Stallion is a heavy transport helicopter with a maximum take-off weight of about 40 tons. The machine can carry over 12 tons of cargo on an external sling, and its cargo hold can accommodate up to 55 passengers. The crew of the helicopter is from two to five people - in addition to the two pilots, it can include three shooters that provide all-round protection.
The maximum flight range of the CH-53K is 840 km, the speed is 315 km / h. The helicopter is equipped with active and passive protection systems - in particular, the armored hull protects the crew and passengers from small-arms fire weapons, and active protection systems can protect the machine from damage by missiles.
