Estonia buys Israeli Blue Spear anti-ship missiles
Estonia purchases Israeli Blue Spear anti-ship missiles (5G SSM). The supply agreement was signed on October 6, 2021. This is reported by the Estonian Ministry of Defense.
The State Defense Investment Center of the Estonian Ministry of Defense and the Israeli-Singaporean company Proteus Advanced Systems Pte. Ltd. signed a contract for the supply of the Estonian Armed Forces with Blue Spear (5G SSM) anti-ship missiles to equip promising coastal missile systems. Israeli anti-ship missiles won the Estonian tender, beating Sweden with Saab RBS-15 Mk 3 + / 4, USA with Harpoon Block II and Norway with Kongsberg NSM.
According to the bmpd blog, the Blue Spear anti-ship missile is actually a new Israeli Gabriel 5 anti-ship missile developed by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI), only sold under the Proteus Advanced Systems brand.
The initial contract price will be $ 46,3 million, but further expansion is expected. Deliveries will begin after 2026. In fact, a coastal mobile anti-ship complex based on the Gabriel 5 / Blue Spear missile does not yet exist, it will be developed specifically for Estonia.
In a press release from Proteus Advanced Systems, it is noted that the Blue Spear anti-ship missile system is a high-precision weaponscapable of striking over-the-horizon, moving and stationary targets in any weather and time of day. The maximum firing range is 290 km. The missile uses an active radar homing head, "precise navigation and reliable communications." It is emphasized that the Blue Spear anti-ship missile system is immune to electronic warfare systems.
