On Wednesday, July 14, 2021, the chief designer of the latest modifications of the MiG-31 fighter-interceptor Valery Vasilkov passed away, he was 62 years old. This was reported by the press service of the Russian Aircraft Corporation (RSK) MiG.
Valery Olegovich Vasilkov was the head of the modernization program for the MiG-31BM fighter-interceptor. Under his leadership, a modification of the MiG-31K was developed - a carrier aircraft of the "Dagger" hypersonic complex; he also oversaw the creation of other options for modernizing the legendary aircraft.
The cause of Vasilkov's death is unknown; the press service of RSK MiG was also unable to name it.
Currently, long-range interceptors MiG-31 continue to serve to protect Russian air borders, intercepting Aviation NATO countries. In 2020, it was reported about plans to extend the life of this aircraft, and the development work on this topic is already underway.
MiG-31 (NATO - Foxhound - foxhound) is an all-weather double supersonic fighter-interceptor of long-range radius. It is designed to intercept and destroy air targets in any altitude range, at any time of the day, in simple and difficult weather conditions. Without refueling, the aircraft is able to fly over distances of up to 3 thousand km. Its ceiling is 20,5 km. The average duration of a flight without refueling is 3,3 hours. A group of four interceptors is able to control the space, the length of which along the front is 800-900 km.
