In addition, a pair of MiG-31K long-range interceptors with Kinzhal hypersonic complexes have been deployed to the Khmeimim airbase specifically for exercises in the Mediterranean Sea.
The ships and aviation will jointly work out several combat training missions, including the defense of two Russian military bases in Syria - Tartus and Khmeimim against the background of the British aircraft carrier Queen Elizabeth being in the Mediterranean Sea, the group of which also includes the notorious destroyer HMS Defender. It is likely that the MiG-31K and Tu-22M3 will work out the tasks of destroying the enemy aircraft carrier group, although completely different tasks will be named aloud.
The participation of long-range bombers in exercises over the Mediterranean Sea became possible after the commissioning of a new runway at the Khmeimim airbase, capable of receiving all types of aircraft.
