US Vice Admiral John Hill, who heads the US missile defense agency, spoke to congressmen about new threats that the US carrier fleet may face.
According to Vice Admiral Hill, the main risks for American aircraft carriers today are associated with the potential use of hypersonic missiles against them.
John Hill:
Our aircraft carriers are already facing the threat of hypersonic weapons, which appears in service with our opponents. The Russians have already adopted Dagger hypersonic missiles that can be launched from fighters and bombers.
It is noted that the first carrier of the "Dagger" in the Russian Aerospace Forces was the MiG-31, which received the designation MiG-31K.
A report from the US Congressional Research Service indicates that several versions of hypersonic weapons are currently being developed in Russia, including the Zircon. It is this sea-based missile that John Hill considers the most formidable weapon against American aircraft carriers. The United States sees significant risks in the fact that the aircraft carrier strike groups of the country's naval forces (Navy) lack systems capable of intercepting hypersonic missiles.
The US Navy has not yet built a missile defense system that could intercept hypersonic missiles.
It is proposed to channel funds for the development of this component of the US Navy, so that aircraft carriers do not become easy targets for hypersonic missiles.
