The Indian Army received from the United States the first batch of assault rifles from SiG Sauer Inc. (an American branch of a German company) to fight terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir, IndiaToday writes. The new SIG 716 will replace the obsolete Indian Insas rifles.
The first batch of 10 000 SiG 716 assault rifles arrived in India today. Another batch of the same number of units is expected soon. Indian army expects to move to arms, which uses a more powerful cartridge than the intermediate 5,56x45 mm. SIG716 uses an 7,62x51 mm caliber cartridge.
Earlier, India signed a contract for the purchase of 72 000 such rifles in the United States according to the accelerated procedure, and it is assumed that this will help the army to act much more effectively against terrorists “being sent from Pakistan,” the text of IndiaToday says.
Most rifles (66 000 units) are for the Indian Army. The rest will be divided between the naval forces (2000 units) and the Air Force (4000 units).
The ground forces will also receive a significant modernization of the rifle arsenal due to the production of more than 700 thousand AK-203 assault rifles, which will be produced at a joint venture with Russia.
Earlier, American media wrote that the United States is interested in the rise of New Delhi as a regional counterbalance to Chinese influence.
