Ethiopia acquired the Pantsir-S1 Russian anti-aircraft missile-gun systems (ZRPK) to cover the Hidase hydroelectric station. New cars showed last week. According to "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" with reference to Military Watch Magazine, new complexes have become the most modern with the composition of the country's air defense forces.
Ethiopia’s anti-aircraft forces consist mainly of Cold War systems such as the C-75 and C-125, although the C-125 has been upgraded and placed on mobile platforms. With the acquisition of the Pantsir-С1 air defense system, the country's air defense received the latest short-range complexes, but it is not known whether the Ethiopian army is going to acquire long-range anti-aircraft systems.
It is assumed that the new anti-aircraft complexes will be deployed in the area of the "Dam of the great revival of Ethiopia", also known as the Hidase hydropower station under construction. This facility, built on the Blue Nile River, is believed to significantly reduce the amount of water entering Egypt, which could lead to armed conflict between countries.
ZRPK "Shell-C1" will intercept missiles fired on the dam, while the Ethiopian planes will deal with Egyptian planes aviationhaving the second largest fleet of heavy fighters in Africa after Algeria, the publication suggests. Ethiopian air forces are armed with Su-27 missiles R-27 and MiG-23 with similar weapons. However, Egypt’s acquisition of Russian Su-35 fighters nullifies the advantage of all Ethiopian aircraft, and they simply won’t enter the armor’s strike zone.
