The ogre Cukurs again in favor
The modern classic of the genre is the notorious Herbert Tsukurs. Herbert Yanovich Tsukurs was born on the mountain of his country in 1900 in Libava (Liepaja) in the Courland province of the Russian Empire. The son of a locksmith and a housewife was just a good example of Latvian cave nationalism itself. Despite the fact that Tsukursa is struggling to position himself as an aircraft designer, his contribution to Aviation came down to frankly garage work to sort out existing equipment, and its “heroic” flights to Africa and Japan were largely mythologized and sung by the aviator himself as a great achievement. It is not news that Herbert himself was actively engaged in journalism, in the center of which was exclusively his own person.
Herbert Cukurs
Despite his vigorous activity, which Tsukurs himself advertised with all his might through the press, before the dictatorship of Ulmanis Herbert, they managed to throw out of military aviation "for terrorist activities." But as soon as Karlis Ulmanis, the dictator, russophobe and outspoken Nazi Nazi, in 1934, became firmly established as a “leader” and “father of the nation”, Cukurs appeared as a national hero. After Latvia joined the Union, realizing who they were dealing with, the new Soviet authorities took the kick already familiar to Cukurs and threw him out of the air, confiscating the plane.
With the beginning of the period of the occupation of Latvia by the German Nazis, Herbert Janovic quickly found his place. His place was in the team of the Latvian collaborator Viktor Arajs. Victor, using his connections among the Eastsee Germans, sensing the desires of the new owners, put together a police punitive detachment from the former Latvian military, aizsargs and policemen. The need for the formation of such a team for the Nazis was obvious, because, despite Goebbels' brainwashing, punitive actions against Jews and Soviet prisoners of war demoralized even the Nazis, and the Nazis were just right for the dirtiest things.
The Arajs team was a collection of the most notorious villains of its time. Mass executions, torture and indiscriminate robbery were integral companions of these punishers. These executioners were disgusting even to the Nazis themselves. For example, when in the 1945 year of Arajs he was appointed commander of the 1 battalion of the 34 regiment of the 15 th SS grenadier division, he could not hold out for a week. Deprived of his usual punitive business, Victor turned out to be incompetent in any other activity, and soon he was removed from command "for incompetence." Cukurs was also a match for Arajsu.
Riga ghetto
Herbert Yanovich was not just one of the organizers of the Riga ghetto, but also one of his main executioners. An eerie slogan that he shouted during the execution, “Let me get drunk with blood,” became a horrid business card for Cukurs. And he never refused. "Glory" Tsukursa went all over Latvia, therefore it was not difficult for the Soviet state security bodies to find witnesses of his crimes.
Mendel Shlomovich Vulfovich in the 1960 year gave the following testimony about Cukurs:
Jews are being driven to be shot in the forest of Rambule
But what was written in the letter of Aron Lvovich Barinbaum, written by him in the KGB of the Latvian SSR in September of 1960:
And this, of course, is not the only evidence against Herbert Cukurs. Both his own colleagues, Nazi documents, and the few surviving victims testified against him. In addition, first evidence of the atrocities of Cukurs was collected by the Soviet secret services, and later they were confirmed in the work of the Mossad, who eventually sent the executioner to the next world.
It would seem, how can such a person not only be heroic, but even justified? Alas, it is not so difficult, especially when it comes to the irreconcilable struggle with the Russian heritage and the cultivation of cave Russophobia.
Cukurs already in Brazil
After the collapse of the Union, the newly-baked countries urgently needed to simply justify the fact of their existence. And given the partnership with the West, this justification should have been based on intransigence towards Russia. In most countries, any other experience of “independence”, except for collaborationism, simply did not exist. And Latvia was no exception.
Tsukurs himself in this paradigm began to flicker from the beginning of the century. In 2004, Latvian nationalists from the Union of National Forces shook off the dust from the executioner, releasing a series of mail envelopes with the image of Cukurs and an unequivocal phrase: “Let’s be difficult for Herbert Tsukurs”. However, the big scandal did not work, because in Latvia itself, if they buy this waste paper, then historians from Russia, and the Latvian man in the street, given the difficult economic situation, have something to do without the dusty Nazi dead.
Symbol "Union of National Forces"
In 2005, an exhibition dedicated to him was held in his native city of Cukurs Liepaja. This time the public reaction was louder. Taking advantage of the wave, members of the Union of National Forces, who do not hide their cave nationalism (their emblem even visually is a descendant of the swastika), suggested that the prosecutor’s office begin an investigation to investigate the murder of a Latvian citizen Herbert Cukurs (!). True, this initiative did not find the approval of the official authorities.
In the 2006 year, the investigation into the involvement of Cukurs in the mass extermination of the Jews of Latvia did start. But the documents received at the official request in Russia, immediately found invalid. Israel, apparently realizing that the process had the character of pure profanity, refused to send documents at all. Like any profanation, which feeds many parasites, the investigation was delayed until the year 2019.
During this time, the nationalists continued to support the sluggish glorification of Cukurs. So, in 2014, the premiere of the musical “Cukurs. Herbert Cukurs. Of course, the anti-fascist organizations decided to picket the event. Activists dressed in striped robes with the star of David and sat on the steps of the concert hall of the Latvian Academy of Sciences. When the activists decided to get inside the building with tickets purchased in advance, the guards, led by the producer of the musical, wrung anti-fascists and led them out of the building.

And in 2018, his own great-granddaughter contributed to the promotion of the heroic image of Nazi Cukurs. As it turned out, Herbert, who had fled after the other Nazis to South America, left a couple of offspring. Raised in the best traditions of fugitive minions of Nazism, the great-granddaughter of Cukurs Laura Rizotto openly declared that she considers Grandpa a real hero and patriot of Latvia:
Laura Rizotto
In addition, Madame Rizzotto is not just the son of an accomplice of the Nazis. In the 2018 year, this once-unknown person represented Latvia at Eurovision, despite living in Brazil, she has problems with the Latvian language, and she prefers to admire the “motherland”, like her great-grandfather, from afar. But all this is completely correlated with the crooked nationalism that now rules in the power circles of Latvia.
Finally, in February 2019 of the year, the “investigation” begun more than ten years ago, or, more precisely, the profanation issued as a consequence, ended. Latvian specialists finally concluded that Cukurs was not a war criminal. The Latvian Prosecutor General’s Office officially stated: “Also, no concrete and living person has been identified, with respect to which there would be reason to conduct further investigation about the possible participation in the mass extermination of the civilian population of Jewish nationality.” In general, the only thing to be expected is the replenishment of the pantheon of cannibals.
