"Modernized warehouse" in Kaliningrad, or Photomontage for beginners
At first glance, the publications are captivating with the thoroughness of the investigation, which was conducted by the Federation of American Scientists (Federation of American Scientists, FAS). The report of the Federation states that for several years the satellite photographed a certain object in the Kaliningrad region not far from the settlement of Alekseyevka. According to Hans Christensen, director of the project on information support of nuclear facilities, "there are all signs of a typical construction site of a Russian nuclear weapons warehouse."
The main proof is a collage of photos.
In the upper left corner is a screenshot from Google Maps from 24 August 2016, which guesses the outlines of the construction. In the right part of the collage there are black and white pictures allegedly received by scientists from the satellite. They depict the same section, but with some object under construction, part of which is underground.
It looks convincing, if not for some details. First, scientists do not report exactly when the satellite images were taken and, accordingly, how much time has passed (and has it passed?) Between the two images. Secondly, black and white photographs are provided by a group of scientists as photographs that were taken by satellites, but there is no way to verify this.
Let's look at the site near Alexeyevka with the help of Google Maps, Google Earth and Yandex Maps. All three tools show us an object in the "before" state. Of course, you can refer to the fact that the photos from Google are dated 2014 and 2016 for years, but this does not make us obliged to believe in the authenticity of black and white American satellite images.
And the words of Hans Christensen do not look like a scientifically based statement: “We have been watching this object for some time. In the past, there have been changes, but such significant ones we see for the first time. Never before have we seen nuclear storage facilities digging in the ground so actively and modernizing. These photos do not prove that Kaliningrad now has a stockpile of nuclear weapons, but they confirm that the site is actively working. ”
So, what we have in fact: the Americans found on Google Maps a picture of a fenced hangar, said it was a warehouse of nuclear weapons, attached an incomprehensible photo, which could easily be the result of working in Photoshop. That's all the evidence. Scientific research conducted with astounding meticulousness.
In order to make an impression on their readers, each of the newspapers did not miss the opportunity to remind that Kaliningrad is close to the US allies in NATO, and the relations between Washington and Moscow have been “so-so” lately. And in general, Russia now should be engaged in holding the World Cup (could not boycott, so at least let's bite!), And not build military facilities. All this is another game on the emotions of readers and a fairy tale about a terrible eastern neighbor.
