Raids on Berlin in 1941

35
Few people know that Berlin was not one, and not two

(According to the Military Historical Report on the combat operations of the BF Air Force, 1946 .g.)

One of the most difficult and remarkable, in terms of organization and execution, of the operations of the first period of the war was the operation to launch bombing attacks on the capital of Nazi Germany - Berlin.

In response to the raids that began aviation the enemy to Moscow and to statements by German propaganda that “Soviet aviation was completely destroyed”, the Supreme High Command assigned the KBF Air Force the following task: “to launch a series of bombing strikes on the political center of fascist Germany - Berlin.”

This operation pursued major political goals.

Due to the advancement of the German army, the front line by the end of July defended Moscow from 450 kilometers, and from Berlin more than 1000 kilometers.

22 July 1941, the Germans launched mass raids on Moscow and announced to the whole world about the destruction of Soviet aviation and that not a single Russian bomb would fall on German cities.

It was necessary to prove to the whole world and the people of Berlin the falsity of fascist propaganda. The operational situation prevailing at the front excluded the possibility of strikes from the airfields of both the Western and Northwestern fronts, due to the lack of a radius of action available for the long-range DB bombers 3.

Raids on Berlin in 1941

The situation at the Baltic theater was somewhat different. At this time, our troops continued to hold northern Estonia and the islands of Dago and Esel.
The shortest distance to Berlin, which allowed the use of DB-3 airplanes, was from the airfields on. Ezel.

1.08.1941 was one of the most trained crews of the 1 mine-torpedo aviation regiment of the Red Banner Baltic Fleet air force, which was redeployed to the airport of Cahul (Ösel).

Initially, the group had 10 aircraft DB - 3, then it was supplemented from the Red Army Air Force to 33 aircraft. The organization of the preparation and execution of the operation was led by the Chief of the Naval Air Force, Lieutenant-General Zhavoronkov S.F.

The group consisted of flight crews who had extensive flight experience and flew in any conditions, day and night. The commander of the group was appointed the commander of the 1-I MTAP colonel Preobrazhensky E.N.

In order to clarify the flight conditions in detail, on the night from 4 to 5 of August, a test, reconnaissance flight to Berlin was organized by a group of five DB-3 aircraft.

Soviet long-range bomber DB-3B “board 2-red” in flight. In front of the cockpit, the RPK-2 radio-compass (frame antenna in fairing) is installed (photo http://waralbum.ru)

Technical analysis of the flight gave the guarantee the ability to carry out missions with a bomb load 750 - 1000 kg. and refueling - 3000kg., while remaining 20% of the fuel stock. Difficult and difficult issues were the technique of blind flight and orientation.

The reconnaissance flight on the night of 4 on August 5 gave the basic ideas about the situation in the area of the target and the conditions of the flight necessary for the organization of further work.

The first raid on Berlin was made on the night of 7 on August 8. In the first raid participated 15 aircraft in three groups, led by the so-called. Preobrazhensky, Grechishnikov and Efremov.

The flight took place in extremely difficult conditions. Three-quarters of the way passed above the surface of the Baltic Sea, out of sight of the coast, part of the route had to fly in the clouds and behind the clouds. Weak flight - navigation equipment of airplanes, combined with difficult flight conditions, with the total duration of 7 - 8 hours, demanded from the crews of extremely high physical and moral stress forces, impeccable piloting and air navigation. Over the entire length of the route from the coastline to the target, the planes were subjected to shelling by antiaircraft artillery (FOR) and floodlights.

The blow was struck from a height of 5500 meters. As a result of the strike, several fires were noted in the areas of the stadium, the new industrial quarter, the railway station and the telegraph.

After completing the task, all the aircraft returned to their airfield.

Subsequently, before 4 September 1941, the group made several more raids on Berlin.

In total, 86 airplanes were made during the month - 3 DB departures, of which only 33 reached Berlin, 37 airplanes for various reasons, mainly meteorological, bombarded spare targets: Stettin, Kolberg, Danzig, Memel, Libava, etc. 18 airplanes due to material failures and weather conditions, they returned to the airfield with ammunition.

In total, during the operation, the group lost 18 airplanes, and it should be noted that, despite the intense fire for the night fighters and the opposition of the fighters, the group lost only one plane on the target (supposedly shot down by the FOR). The remaining losses are associated with the difficulties of flying from a limited aerodrome, with poor autumn weather conditions and with the complete absence of alternate aerodromes. During the takeoff, the 2 of the aircraft crashed, during the landings, the 5 machines, 2 DBs - 3 were lost due to the failure of the materiel on the route, another one - for an unknown reason.

28 August the Germans occupied Tallinn and Paldiski, leaving the group on Fr. Ezel was cut off from bases more than 400 kilometers. Delivery of ammunition, fuel and spare parts was extremely difficult. To all this, the opponent is 6.09.1941. produced an airfield attack that lasted more than 30 minutes. Despite the excellent masking, from 9 DB - 3, standing on the airfield, 7 was destroyed. The decision of the Command, the operation, due to the above reasons, was discontinued and the personnel of the group was evacuated from the island.

All members of the crews of the group were awarded orders and medals, and the leading groups: E.N. Transfiguration, V.A. Grechishnikov, A.Ya. Efremov, M.N. Plotkin and the regiment navigator P.I. Khokhlov was awarded the title Hero of the Soviet Union.

You can learn more about the attacks on Berlin from the memoirs of P.I. Khokhlova outlined in the fourth chapter of the book "Baltic Naval Aviation fleet”, The preparation and publication of which I was able to carry out at the end of 2003, after three years of work on it.

In light of the above, the current NATO hawks should remember that Russian aviation has stepped far forward and Washington is not so far from Moscow, not to mention Europe.

      Like nobody What nonsense.
When I was a student (in the late 70s), a grandfather-docent - Hero of the Soviet Union worked at our department. He got a hero for participating in one of the first bombings of Berlin. He then told us quite a bit on political information about these raids. Details with dates, facts. surnames. This Hero has long died. And I don’t remember the name now. But at the department of our ex you can definitely find out.
Our Berlin was bombed. And more than once. Already in the year 41.

There is a reference to this episode:
Finally, in early June, a plan was drawn up for a raid on Berlin, which was rather an act of moral intimidation. It was decided to prepare the Jules Verne for the flight - on the night of June 7-8, taking with it about half a ton of bombs (different sources of bomb load vary), the bomber headed for the German capital. The route of his flight ran along a long detour through the North and Baltic Seas, although the air defense of Berlin until 1943 was far from being at an altitude and it was possible to fly a direct route. The French, however, could only guess about this.

"Demonstration of force" was successful then, the city was lit up, there was no air defense, the plane pretended to land near Tempelhof. At low altitude, it flies to the northern suburb and reaches its goal - the Siemens factories.
At 100 meters height, at a speed of 350 km / h, he dropped his 8 bombs of 220 kg and 80 incendiary bombs of 10 kg. Safely returned to his homeland. He repeated, bombing the Heinkel factories in Rostock three days later, but on July 10, Italy declared war.

Compared to ours, zilch, but was it? wink

    After the first raid ...
On the morning of August 8, the Berlin radio broadcast a message: “Last night, large British aviation forces in the number of 150 aircraft tried to bomb our capital. Of the 15 aircraft that had broken through to the city, 9 was shot down. ”

Literally an hour later, the answer to the bewildered BBC followed: "The German report on the bombing of Berlin is interesting and mysterious, since neither the 7 nor the 8 of August British aircraft flew over Berlin."

Until noon Moscow paused. And exactly at 12 hours, the Soviet Information Bureau transmitted a message from the Soviet government that our aircraft successfully bombed the capital of Nazi Germany, as a result of the bombing in the city there were explosions and fires, and all the planes returned to their bases. On the same day, the text of this message was published by Izvestia.

It is said that the Fuhrer was furious. The Reichsmarschall Goering, who assured that “not a single bomb falls on the Reich capital,” and the propaganda minister, Dr. Goebbels, who hastened to bury Soviet aviation in his statements, also got it. And the former military aviation attache of Germany, who for several years before the war in the Soviet Union was unable to obtain reliable information about the presence of bombers of this class in the Soviets, was shot.

From Igor Sofronov's article "A Special Assignment" it is well-written, then the article touched me, and most importantly, few people know about it ...
    Glory to Our Heroes !!!

After completing the task, all the aircraft returned to their airfield.

In the morning, the Goebel propaganda announced that at night English planes raided Berlin. The raid was successfully repelled, and the British lost more than a dozen cars. However, already at lunchtime, the British said that due to the non-flying weather over the islands, the British planes did not fly that night.
Yes, these attacks carried more political and psychological meaning, and only then military. They flew from Ezel Island because the nights were short. The aircraft did not have time to return before dawn. This was shown by the second raid on Berlin already from the suburbs.
One can only admire the courage and determination of the pilots, their selfless love for the motherland.

This is not such an unknown story - a lot of materials were published, and those interested in history had the opportunity to find out more!
The raids were purely psychological, great success was achieved in this regard, from the military the results were highly controversial, but there was such a time, it was extremely important to achieve psychological success ...

So psychological success is one of the most important components of military success. What is controversial? I think it was a very important matter. And not only in terms of psychological pressure on Germany, but no less - in maintaining our own fighting spirit and faith in Victory.

About EP-2 - this is unlikely, the range will not allow, but the Hero of the Soviet Union Vodopyanov in his memoirs also talked about raids on Berlin on Pe-8 aircraft.
Before the war, the introduction of Charomsky diesels into aviation was actively going on because of fuel economy. On the Pe-8, in the original version, there were four main engines (in my opinion Mikulinsky) and the fifth in the fuselage for boost.
Vodopyanov recalls that in this version the plane was - a song: high-altitude, high-speed. And with diesels, many fell even on take-off or during the flight - failures, failures ... On the way back I got from my anti-aircraft gunners and fighter jets (they never saw such large machines, but their eyes are big with fear).
So that. Be that as it may - they bombed Berlin and did not bombard sickly.
Glory to the heroes and eternal memory!

And here's more about the bombing of Berlin http://www.airwiki.org/history/av2ww/soviet/tb7/tb7.html, although not so rosy. On TB-7 Molotov V.M. flew to London, the British envied such a machine then already modified fifth engine for boosting. High speed and ceiling allowed the machine to fly over enemy (occupied) territory.

That's just for the delivery of aerial bombs to Ezel for these raids minesweepers were used, which on the BF was completely insufficient. At the same time, not one trawler was sunk by German aircraft. Why not use for this at least the MO with their more powerful anti-aircraft weapons? A completely incomprehensible decision by the Commander of the Tributs fleet.
And how then these minesweepers were not enough during the Tallinn crossing ...

When I read the conditions under which our pilots had to fly to Berlin, I remembered the skepticism with which Hitler told Goering about the night bombing of London: "Where can your pilots find London at night if they cannot find it during the day?" That's for sure - Russians can do things that seem impossible for others. Moreover, using what is, not what you want.

It is a pity, the author said nothing about Molodch ...
