Mark Rutte said the Netherlands will not ratify the agreement on the association of Ukraine and the EU
According to the Dutch Prime Minister, the cabinet of the country will not be able to go against the will of the people expressed during the referendum in April 2016.
Mark Rutte (TC "112 Ukraine"):
Recall that a referendum on the Ukrainian issue was held in the Netherlands on April 6 2016. Then 61,49% voted against the association agreement with Ukraine. In Kiev, after the announcement of the results of the referendum in the Netherlands, it was announced that "there was a low turnout, and in general the referendum is only of an advisory nature."
Now Rutte makes it clear that he is not ready to go against the opinions of compatriots who have come to the polling stations for the plebiscite. The current prime minister understands that ignoring the outcome of the April referendum could cost him the support of parliament and the electorate inside the country.
It should be noted that the Netherlands was part of the EU under conditions that fully meet the interests of the state. In particular, the country has a law under which the Netherlands can veto any EU decision on association with other countries. If Amsterdam realizes this right, then it will be possible to put a cross on the Ukrainian association with the European Union. And Rutte hints at this transparently.
