The petition posted on the White House website demanding to cancel the “Magnitsky Act” for 2 weeks was signed by more than 109 thousand people, it reports RIA News.
A petition published April 23 states:
“We demand that Magnitsky’s law be repealed as it was passed as a result of fraudulent lobbying by Browder (head of Hermitage Capital) and Khodorkovsky (ex-head of Yukos), the last of which is being sought by Russian law enforcement agencies.
Their lobbying activities, long proven by civilian journalists, are carried out against the national interests of the United States.
The Magnitsky Act discredits the US legislature, and therefore it should be repealed. ”
Since the document scored more than 100 thousand votes in less than a month, the Obama administration is obliged to consider it and notify every signer of the decision within 60 days.
The agency recalls that "the so-called" Magnitsky Act "was adopted in the US on December 14 2012 of the year, and in accordance with it, visa sanctions were imposed on Russians who, according to congressmen, were involved in human rights violations." In the spring of 2014, the European Parliament also adopted its “Magnitsky list”.
