A spokesman for the French state-owned military shipbuilding company DCNS on Wednesday told RIA Newsthat an advance payment was received and the French side began the construction of the first Mistral-type helicopter carrier for the Russian Navy.
The contract for the construction of two "Mistral" - French-made helicopter carriers - was signed in June 2011. The total contract value is 1,2 billion euros.
"We received an advance a few weeks ago. The construction of the first ship begins. It will be completed in 2014, the second - in 2015," said a company spokesman.
He also said that the construction of the second vessel should begin several months later. Both ships will be built in parallel. However, he could not say whether the start of construction of the second helicopter carrier would depend on the timing of payment for the first one.
Universal helicopter carrier "Mistral" has a displacement of 21 thousand tons. The helicopter carrier develops speed of 18 nodes with the length of the hull 210 meters. Maximum cruising range - 20 thousand miles. The Mistral is served by a crew of 160 people. In addition to them, the helicopter carrier can take another 450 man. 6 from 16 helicopters of the Mistral air group can simultaneously be stationed on the takeoff deck. After the transfer of Russia, it is planned to deploy eight Ka-29 and Ka-52K helicopters each.
