Norway has decided to save the submarine fleet
The Norwegian Ministry of Defense has decided to keep the country's submarine fleet, which currently consists of Ula-class diesel-electric submarines, Defense News reports. Earlier, a special commission of the department conducted a study, as a result of which it proposed three options: not to purchase new submarines after the decommissioning of Ula-type diesel-electric submarines, to extend the service life of already used submarines and to purchase new ones, or to abandon submarines in favor of submarines. robots. After studying the report of the commission, the Ministry of Defense chose the second option.
The reason for the study was the approaching time for the cancellation of Ula-type submarines in service with Norway from the 1989-1992. These diesel-electric submarines passed several medium-term modernization programs and, according to the current schedule, should be written off after the 2020 year. After reviewing the detailed report, the Norwegian Ministry of Defense concluded that submarines are needed by the country and no alternative options can replace the diesel-electric submarines used today.
It is expected that in the near future the special commission will begin a new study, the purpose of which will be to study options for replacing Ula-class submarines, as well as assess the feasibility of extending the life of used diesel-electric submarines. A report from this study will be submitted to the Norwegian Ministry of Defense by the end of 2014. Final recommendations for underwater upgrades fleet will be formed before the end of 2017; they will be submitted to the Ministry of Defense and Parliament.
To date, Norway has received only an unofficial offer from Sweden for the supply of a new generation of diesel-electric submarines. These diesel-electric submarines are developed by the Swedish shipbuilding company Kockums, commissioned by the Ministry of Defense and the command of the Swedish Navy. Among other possible options for the supply of submarines in Norway - the German diesel-electric submarines of projects Type 26 and Type 212.
Until the end of the 1990-ies, the Norwegian naval forces were armed with 14 diesel-electric submarines: six types of “Ula” and eight types of “Cobben”. The latter were written off in the period from 1998-th to 2000 year; half of them were transferred to the Polish Navy, and the rest were disposed of. The Ula-type submarines that remained in service are used by the Norwegian military mainly to patrol the coast; their immersion depth is limited to 250 meters.
