Ukrainian director Sentsov in Rostov-on-Don sentenced to 20 years in prison

August 25 becomes the day of high-profile court decisions. First came the information that the Sudogodsky court granted the petition of lawyers Yevgenia Vasilyeva for her release on parole, it is now reported that the North Caucasian District Military Court sentenced the Ukrainian director Sentsov to 20 years of imprisonment for organizing terrorist acts in Crimea. Another defendant, Alexander Kolchenko, who was on the bench, was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
RIA News cites an excerpt from the speech of the judge of the North Caucasian District Military Court:
In the aggregate of crimes, by partial addition, to appoint Sentsova 20 to the years of a strict regime colony.
The prosecutor asked Sentsov to be sentenced to 23 years in prison.
The Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation established that last year, Sentsov created a cell of the Right Sector on the territory of the Crimean Peninsula - an extremist organization banned in the Russian Federation. According to the investigators, representatives of the Pravosek cell in Crimea set fire to the offices of the “Russian community of Crimea” and the office of the party “United Russia”. Sentsov was also accused of trying to carry out an explosion in the center of Simferopol 9 in May 2014, with the goal of destabilizing the situation on the peninsula.
It is reported that Sentsov and Kolchenko sang the Ukrainian anthem during the announcement of the verdict.
Until the sentence enters into force, Sentsov and Kolchenko will remain in detention center 4 in Rostov-on-Don.
