RF submitted an updated application for the expansion of the shelf in the Arctic zone
Russia submitted to the United Nations a partially revised application for expanding the boundaries of the continental shelf in the Arctic by joining the Lomonosov Ridge and other entities of continental nature, reports RIA News. Previously, the application was rejected due to insufficient information.
“The Revised Application of the Russian Federation for the establishment of the outer boundary of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean is based on the scientific understanding that the components of the Central-Arctic Submarine Rise Complex, namely the Lomonosov Ridge, the Mendeleev Ridge - Alpha and the Chukotka Rise and the Chukotka Basin separating them and the Chukotka Basin have the continental nature of their education ", - says the text of the application.
The document states that “the listed areas of the ocean floor are natural components of the continental margin, to which, according to paragraph 6 of Article 76 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the remote limit 350 of nautical miles from baselines does not apply.”
Geodetic coordinates of the objects and distances calculated by specialists are attached to the application.
If scientists can prove that these ridges are a continuation of the Russian shelf, “the country will have the priority right to develop these resources, the volume of which, according to the Ministry of Environment, can reach 5 billion tons of standard fuel,” the agency notes.
