The need for such a machine arose when there were plans to use the “winged infantry” on enemy territory. In this case, a huge role was given to airborne self-propelled artillery installations. However, the existing ASU-57 and ASU-85 models were designed to combat tanks. In addition, they were not very convenient for landing, as this required the landing of a transport aircraft on the runway, which eliminated surprise. That is why in the mid 60's. work began aimed at creating a more convenient and at the same time powerful machine.
